Philppe Cartoux at Espiers makes an enviable range of svelte, organic southern Rhônes. This is named after the vineyard, 3/4 Grenache and 1/4 Syrah, given eight months in large 600l. demi-muids, not to lend oak flavour but just to round it out. So ripe. Penetrating red fruit nose. Gorgeous heart, redolent of strawberry liqueur. Intense but not in the least heavy: this delivers power with grace. Already approachable but with years to go. One for a daube or any hearty casserole. Philippe Cartoux distributes his wines to some of the most prestigious restaurants in France; to Taillevent, the great Parisian restaurant and emporium, to the Robuchon group (totaling 32 Michelin stars between them!) as far as Tokyo and Beirut, not to mention to Alain Ducasse’s restaurant at the top of the Eiffel tower and also to the eccentric Marc Veyrat, as renowned for his large hat as for his two restaurants with triple Michelin stars in Annecy and Megève.
All the wines are certified organic and would qualify as natural wine (low sulphur).
