Felton Road, Bannockburn Pinot Noir, 2023
Felton Road's Bannockburn Pinot Noir is blended from wines from the estate's four named vineyards: traditionally it was about 30% of each of Cornish Point, Elms and Macmuir, plus 10% of Calvert, but the proportion from Macmuir has declined since Felton Road began releasing a single vineyard bottling with the 2022 vintage. Whilst priced lower than the single vineyard bottlings it really shouldn't be viewed as inferior.
Tasted with Nigel Greening, December 2024. Surprisingly forward and delicious. Pretty, berried perfume with just a savoury hint. Gorgeous fruit and flesh. Fine acid spine. Very successful and no need to wait. Now-2029
"Mid crimson. Peppery and more savoury than the Marlborough Pinots I have tasted so far. Pure, dark-red fruit and nicely earthy. Firm and savoury on the palate, too, even though there's a cloak of sweet fruit. Firm, smooth tannins. Fresh, long and beautifully balanced. 17/20, 2025-2035", Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, 12th November 2024.
"Perfumed aromas of wild strawberries, red raspberries, blood oranges and dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and precise acidity, giving notes of blackberries, potpourri, wet bark, dark cherries and graphite. Finely balanced and refined. Made from a blend of all four estate vineyards. Drink or hold. Screw cap. 95/100", James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, Novemner 2024
