Domaine Fontanel, Amae Blanc, IGP Côtes Catalanes, 2023
‘Amae' represents Mathieu and Elodie's initials along with those of their two young children. Grenache Blanc and Roussanne in an almost Burgundian style, with the Roussanne portion aged in new barrels. Full-bodied, nutty and intense with a creamy edge from the battonage. Silky smooth finish. Excellent. Meursault-lovers should tuck in. Now-2028
"The honeysuckle and jasmine flowers of Roussanne; the waxy-potato-in-sour-cream of Grenache Blanc. Such a unique combination of flavours and textures that could only come from Roussillon. There are chive flowers and lemon zest in that sweet-earth-chestnut taste of baby Jersey potatoes. I can taste honey and lime under the floaty flirty gauze of jasmine. And lanolin from the Grenache Gris (thank you very much). The oak has made a firm imprint on the nose and palate, but just when you think about pronouncing that the wine is too oaky, everything else catches up and caboodles the oak into the boot. It might benefit from another year or two in bottle, just to bed the oak in." Drink 2026-2030, 17/20, Tamlyn Currin, jancisrobinson.com, 1st July 2025
