Cabernet Franc
Cabernet Francis a parent of Cabernet Sauvignon.
A cross of it with Sauvignon Blanc resulted in Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc tends to be softer and has less tannins than Cabernet Sauvignon, although the two can be difficult to distinguish. Many of the red wines of the Loire are primarily Cabernet Franc.

Château Barrejat, Madiran, Cuvee des Vieux Ceps, 2022
Vieux Céps = Old vines, and these are dramatically ancient, some over 80 years old and some actually pre-phylloxera, so perhaps over 150 years old. 80% Tannat plus the Cabernets, well-oaked. That oak shows with overt toast on the nose. Flamboyant flavours of cherry, plum and blueberry, all tinged with mocha. Dense, full-bodied; and with plenty of tannin to keep it going - enjoy now or keep for years. Now-2030
"Full bottle 1,244 g. These old vines are probably 80 years old and some may even be pre-phylloxera, so perhaps over 150 years old. 80% Tannat plus the Cabernets, oaked. Really quite rich and ripe on the nose – quite a surprise for a Tannat-based wine! Sweet start with the Tannat tannins well hidden. This should really appeal to those who like a wine to drink now and cellar. It's not a bordeaux copy but has its own very distinctive local personality. Oakphobes should avoid but even at this early stage there is enough distraction from the oak which should fade GV.16.5+/20, Drink 2024-2030" Jancis Robinson MW, jancisrobinson.com, 25th October 2024
Lying about 40 kilometers north of Pau near the town of Maumusson, Barréjat is an old-fashioned, family-owned estate, with a little walled courtyard at the top of a hill formed by home and cellar, surrounded by vineyards. Denis himself is a shy man: he is a farmer of La France profonde, happy to work amongst his vines, and has no aspiration to become rich from his labour. As he has inherited his land (i.e. not had to buy it with a huge loan from Crédit Agricole), and owns a decent 40 hectares of vines, he can make a very satisfactory living whilst selling excellent, honestly priced wine behind traditional labels. And he’s no slouch at winemaking: the Tannat grape is notorious for giving tannic wines which need to be laid down for years but his reds are approachable as soon as offered.
Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.Read More
