Cederberg

South Africa

The redoubtable David Nieuwoudt took over the Cederberg estate from his father in 1997.

We first visited David in 2003, when he was in the midst of his planting programme, and have worked with him ever since then.

The Cederberg vineyards here are 1100-1150 metres up in the Cederberg mountains, most of them on dramatic shale slopes. Good natural rainfall,...

Cederberg, V Generations Chenin Blanc, 2022

"Lovely greengage, winter melon and kiwi aromas. Light and elegant, absorbing the supporting oak with lovely tangy vitality. 94/100. Silver", 2024 Decanter World Wine Awards

"Ripe, luscious and indulgent, 22 retains fine focus & balance, with layered stone & citrus fruit complexity, rich, creamy texture & vivid acid. Slow, wild yeast barrel ferment - 10 months mostly seasoned oak round out palate without intruding. Delicious now & for several years. *****", Platter's 2024 South African Wine Guide.

Always one of the top pure Chenins in the Cape: barrel fermentation and ageing (18% 1st fill, 18% 2nd fill, 18% 3rd fill and 46% older oak) adds roundness and creaminess to Cederberg's mountain-fresh fruit. Now-2028

This is made by David Nieuwoudt, who took over the amazing Cederberg estate from his father in 1997. The vineyards here are the highest in the Cape,at 1100-1150 metres up in the Cederberg mountains. Good natural rainfall, around 550-600mm, cool temperatures (occasionally snow-showers in winter), with plenty of wind, mean that Cederberg enjoys a near perfect climate, in particular a long ripening period. The whites are mountain-fresh, with plentiful natural acidity.

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
