The Burgundy Pyramid

Making sense of the complexity of the complexity of Burgundy isn’t easy.

Though Burgundy only comprises 5% of France’s vineyard area, it holds 100 different Appellations, 25% of the entire French total.  There are no less than 5,000 growers, 85% of whom own less than 10 hectares, and four fifths of them make wine.

Domaine Jean Guiton, Bourgogne Cote D'Or Pinot Noir, 2022

From four parcels, two in Bligny and two between Bligny and Pommard, given 12 months in barrel, second or third fill. Very classic this year. Bright red fruit and just a lick of tannin. Everything you would want from a wine like this. A wine to stock up on. Now-2027

From four parcels, two in Bligny and two between Bligny and Pommard. Organic farming, indigenous yeasts. Aged 12 months in second- and third-fill barrels. Deepish crimson. There’s a lovely dark-fruited sweetness to the aroma here but the fruit is fresh and lively, damson and blueberry with a core of freshness. As it opens, it is beautifully scented with masses of fruit but not simplistically so. Ripe-fruited on the palate, too, and yet finely fresh thanks to both acidity and gentle but sufficient tannins. Good balance, inviting and, for burgundy, this is both fruit-filled and decent value. Shows all the ease of 2022." 16/20, 2025-2028, Julia Harding MW, www.jancisrobinson.com, 19th February 2024

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
