New Wave Australia
The caricature of Australian wines used to be big, oaky Chardonnays and, well, big, oaky Shiraz. It’s an image that is now very out of date. The country’s best winemakers – like Franco d’Anna of Hoddles Creek and Wickhams Road and Amelia Nolan of Alkina - are seeking out cooler sites and producing elegant wines that place the emphasis on freshness rather than power. Both wineries featured in the top 30 of James Halliday’s Top 100 Australian Wineries published late last year.
