Marques de Lara, Vinho Verde, 2025

Made by Casa de Vila Nova on an old aristocratic estate, this is a very good example of modern Vinho Verde. A blend of Loureiro and Fernao Pires, it is light, spritzy and refreshing with floral-edged citrus fruit. An excellent deckchair wine. Now-2027

Amoruccio, Grillo, Sicilia, 2025

he Rocca family are a terrific source of great value Italian wines, especially from Puglia and Sicily. Grillo thrives in the heat of the southern Mediterranean, retaining freshness and relatively low alcohol despite the abundant sunshine. This is a delicious example full of lemon and peach fruit. Domaine de la Chauvinière, Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur lie, 2025

This has just arrived and very good it is too. A very pure, very fresh Muscadet that ticks all the boxes. From low yielding vines on the estate's classic granitic soils, it is bone dry with mouthwatering, zesty citrus and mineral notes. 12%. Now-2028
It is hard to believe when meeting Jérémie Huchet that he has been in charge of the family domaine for more than fifteen years; he really does not look old enough. The Muscadet region has struggled to adapt to changing tastes in...

Loire Valley

In early February I undertook our annual visit to the wine fair in Angers, escaping the snow which engulfed much of the UK during that week.

This is the yearly opportunity for the vast majority of vignerons in the Loire valley to show off their latest offerings to the rest of the world. The early season’s weather in 2008 was not kind, with variously frost, hail and torrential...

La Salette, IGP Côtes de Gascogne Rouge, 2024

This is a light red which one could easily serve slightly chilled with lunch (at just 12.5%) or with spicy food: the French would call it “frais”, fresh. It is very good with a simply roast chicken too. There are strawberries and raspberries, a plush core, and minimal tannins. From 50% Tannat plus 25% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it delivers simple, immediate pleasure and outperforms its price. Now-2028

Finca Deneza Malbec, Mendoza, 2024

Our ‘house’ Malbec and a wine that sells very well to our restaurant customers. Sourced from 25 year old vines in Maipú, it has plenty of red and black-berried fruit and just a peck of spice. Supple enough to be enjoyed without food, it will be perfect with classic barbecued sausages, burgers and halloumi. Now-2027

Malbec

Malbec is a red grape whose home is in south-west France, and specifically in the appellation of Cahors.

There (known as Cot) it makes a strongly flavoured wine which is, all too often, tannic and rustic and needs several years ageing to show its best.

Like Carmenère in Chile, it is much more successful in Argentina than in its homeland. Introduced in the mid 19th...

Rocca, Negroamaro, Salento, 2023

This is one of the best selling reds at our Stockbridge shop – partly owing to the patriotic bias of our Italian manager, Fed, but also because customers know it over-delivers for the price. Aged partly in oak, it has lots of Puglian character: generous, ripe damson fruit, spices and just a hint of black olive. If you have a wood fired oven in the garden, this goes superbly with pizza. ow-2027

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
