Koelfontein Chardonnay, Ceres, 2022
From a block planted in 1987; about 1/3 matured in new barrels, 2/3 second fill. Seductive cream citrus and leesy aromas. Lime and melon, well-knit, with dairy and nutty accents. With freshness, opulence and decent drive and length, this delivers a lot for the price. Now-2027The Conradie family, the seventh generation farmers who own Koelfontein, have abundant orchards, but they also own the first vineyard in the Ceres Plateau district, just six hectares split between Chardonnay and Shiraz...

I discovered the Koelfontein Chardonnay a couple of years ago by ordering a delicious bottle on the terrace of The Tulbagh hotel.
I had never heard of it – nor indeed any wine estate in Ceres, which is much better known as a fruit growing centre. The Conradie family, the seventh generation farmers who own Koelfontein, have abundant orchards, but they also own the...

Chardonnay
Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.
Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Koelfontein, Shiraz, Ceres, 2021
This terrific Shiraz, given 20 months in new French barrels, is spectacular. Youthful purple. Ripe black fruit and coffee aromatics. So bold and vibrant, delivering a gorgeous gush of blackberry and dark plum. Manages the delicate balancing act of being both juicy and oaky at the same time. Nicely ripe tannins. Very long. Cries out for beef or lamb, grilled or roasted. Now-2027The Conradie family, the seventh generation farmers who own Koelfontein, have abundant orchards, but they also own...

Shiraz / Syrah
Powerful, black-fruited, often aged in oak, syrah/Shiraz comes in varying styles but at the top (such as Hermitage) can be spectacular and very long-lived.
There is no question that Syrah is now the most fashionable red grape for new plantings in many New World countries, especially South Africa and Chile.

Koelfontein Dozen
A mixed case featuring a couple of cracking Cape wines, exclusive to SVS, sourced from Ceres - a well known fruit growing area - that is miles off the beaten track from most wineries but quickly emerging as a wine region to watch. The Conradie family, the seventh generation farmers who own Koelfontein, have abundant orchards but they also planted the first vineyard in the district, initially with Chardonnay, and they still only farm six hectares split between Chardonnay and Shiraz on the steep, south facing slopes of the Gydo pass just north of Prince Albert Hamlet.
These wines exemplify perfectly how wines from the Cape so often sit between “Old” and “New” world styles: though both are well-oaked and full-flavoured, they also show restraint and balance. The Chardonnay has an attractive 13% of alcohol; and the Shiraz has appealing savoury hints alongside the ripe black fruit.
The case includes 8 bottles of the Chardonnay and 4 bottles of the Shiraz wines with a discount of over 13%, saving over £28.
