Felton Road, MacMuir Pinot Noir, 2022
Nigel Greening bought the MacMuir vineyard - which lies between his own Elms and Calvert sites, and is on similar heavy silt soils to the latter - in 2010 and planted it to Pinot in 2012. He used a wide range of clones, including massal selections from his own vines, plus recently released Dijon clones 828 and 943 and chose high density planting. The first release of a single vineyard bottling from this site was the 2021 vintage: before that the fruit went into the Bannockburn.
"Lovely intense aromatics; morello cherry, plum, violets. Some dried thyme and sage. Tannins right there from the start, powdery and finely grained, contributing a bitter dark chocolate note. There is plenty of concentration underlying but this wine needs time to unfurl. Structured. Drink from 2027–2032. *** 93/100", Jane Skilton, Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy, March 2024
"Intense wine that is on the dark side with concentrated flavours that suggest black fruits, cacao powder, liquorice and anise supported by sweet, chewy tannins A wine of substance and of promise. Time will add new layers to an already tantalisingly complex wine. 97/100", Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, August 2023
