Le Lupinaie, Ciliegiolo, Rosso Maremma, 2023
For years we have hunted for a Ciliegiolo – this grape is, according to the latest genetic analysis, either a parent of Sangiovese or a close relation, and it’s worth seeking out, in particular in its principal homes of the Maremma on the Tuscan coast and around Narni in southern Umbria. The name translates as “cherry” and never has a grape been more accurately named: it’s cherry scented and crushed cherry flavoured – and a particular type of black cherry, not sweet but dark and fleshy. Currently (autumn 2024) youthful, it benefits from being decanted to show its aromatic best. Now-2026
