Wickhams Road, Chardonnay, Yea Valley, 2024

Like the Yarra, the Yea Valley in Victoria is high and cool. Winemaker Franco D'Anna says this is “made in exactly the same manner as the Estate range”, fermented in older barrels and with “a purity of fruit and a beautiful line of acid”.  It’s certainly the freshest and brightest of his Chardonnays, with all natural acidity.  Lime and melon accented. Linear Chardonnay with a racy edge. Now-2029
“Picked a week later than the ’23, this brightly coloured wine has a...

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Hoddles Creek, Chardonnay, Yarra Valley, 2024

All fruit is hand-picked in the morning and immediately de-stemmed and lightly crushed before fermentation in barrel, with only a small proportion of new French oak. Lovely scent of stone fruit.  Rounded on the palate, with hints of lemon, white peach and a creamy note. Long finish.  Such a reliably excellent wine - just delicious, with perfect acid balance. Now-2030
“Juicy white fruit, grapefruit, aniseed, a little struck match, almond paste, cinnamon and clove spice. It’s...

Hoddles Creek, Road Block Chardonnay, Yarra Valley, 2021

A new single vineyard wine (just six barrels made), from a block originally planted to Sauvignon Blanc, then pulled out and replanted with the Mendoza clone of Chardonnay. It’s a cool east-facing block, only seeing the morning sun and steep enough to be terraced. The Mendoza clone gives a very forward flavour, with plenty of ripeness and richness even when picked early. This is a different animal to the Estate or Syberia Chardonnays. Some creaminess on the nose, but lovely acidity on the...

Hoddles Creek, Syberia Chardonnay, Yarra Valley, 2022

From a single vineyard, a high, very cool site (hence the name), planted to five clones, in cleared forest in the Upper Yarra. The vine rows run east west, minimising exposure of the bunches to the sun. The fruit is picked early in the morning, whole bunch pressed to tank, left to settle overnight and then transferred into barrel. Bright colour.  Intense nose which is a little riper than usual.  More generous than usual in this warmer vintage. Finesse and freshness.  Now-2030

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
