This won the Trophy in the 2024 Wine GB awards for Best Vintage Classic Cuvée –remarkable given it was up against much bigger and better known names. From the splendid summer of 2020, this is made by inspired winemaker Daniel Ham on the farm above Downton, south of Salisbury.
Hugo Stewart has to be one of the most experienced hands among English wine producers. Over twenty years ago he established Les Clos Perdus, a domaine which was a pioneer of bio-dynamic viticulture in the Corbiéres. Returning to his family farm on chalk downland in Wiltshire, he was determined to carry on farming with bio-dynamics (certified) and his vines always look conspicuously healthy. This is from a blend of all his grapes - Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Gris - pressed in an old basket press with 20% vinified in amphorae and the rest in old barrels. No added sulphur and no dosage. Scent of crème patisserie. So intense, with a yeasty richness sliced by a fine mineral streak. Very fine mousse – and great vibrancy, freshness and length. Now-2027
