Piekenierskloof

South Africa

For years I had been hearing about Piekenierskloof – not as a wine producer but as a source of grapes for numerous other winemakers, young and old.

I didn’t realise that Piekenierskloof wasn’t just a ward (the smallest geographical unit in the South African regional classification) but one large estate, formerly a...

Piekenierskloof, Grenache Blanc, 2023

Piekenierskloof (the name of a ward, the smallest geographical unit in the South African regional classification, as well as the estate owned by two brothers) is fortunate to have a great heritage of old Rhône varieties, red and white. This is from bush vines planted in 1987 on koffieklip and loam; and fermented in old oak vats. This is amazingly vibrant this vintage.

"Full bottle a heavy 1,396 g. Bush vines planted in 1987 on koffieklip and loam in a small ward (subregion) within the Citrusdal Mountain district on the western coast of the Cape, some way north of Cape Town. Fermented in old oak vats. Rich citrus and pear aroma that smells so creamy and rounded, even if 'rounded' is not an aroma. There's a surprising impression of vanilla even though the the oak used for fermentation is old and large. Smells so pure and fresh. Rich in the mouth, full of fruit and with the weight and firm texture of Grenache Blanc well-ripened. Yet it's also immensely fresh. This has impressive length and intensity for the price. Hard not to like. 16/20, Drink 2024-2026”. Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com, 1 November 2024

Open, stimulating scents of grapefruit peel and nectarines. Ripe (pink?) grapefruit heart, plus notes of quince and melon. Splendidly vivid and intense at the price. So exuberant that it stands up to rich and highly spiced food – it drank superbly with a Sri Lankan fish curry. Now-2026

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
