The name of this 1er cru originates from “cailloux”; its calcareous soil is full of stones and known to produce wine with a steely elegance. Aromatic nose, well integrated palate of lemon and stone fruits, rich – and a touch of toasty oak shows through. Racy and classy Chassagne. 2026-2032
Certified organic though this is not stated on the label. The name comes from the French for ‘stones’, referring to the calcareous soil. More obviously oaky on the nose than the Clos Devant but not overdone. Spicy, creamy and rich, then pulled tight on the palate by mouth-watering cedary citrus fruit. Concentrated without being heavy. Long, chewy and all in harmony. It’s very good, with fine precision to the fruit and winemaking, and very long, but the Clos Devant is better value, as is the Santenay Les Hâtes. 17.5/20. 2025–2032, Julia Harding MW, www.jancisrobinson.com, 19th February 2024
