Fichet, Macon-Burgy, Les 3 Terroirs, 2023

Olivier Fichet’s unoaked Chardonnay comes from three plots of vines - some very old - in the excellent terroir of the northern Mâconnais near Viré. We have shipped every vintage of this since the 2005, testament to its quality and consistency. There's a charming floral scent to the latest vintage - a hint of blossom.  Lots of ripe citrus flavour. Lightly creamy but also pleasingly fresh. Delicious. Now-2027

The Burgundy Pyramid

Making sense of the complexity of the complexity of Burgundy isn’t easy.

Though Burgundy only comprises 5% of France’s vineyard area, it holds 100 different Appellations, 25% of the entire French total.  There are no less than 5,000 growers, 85% of whom own less than 10 hectares, and four fifths of them make wine.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Domaine d'Elise, Petit Chablis, 2023

We have worked with this domaine for 23 years simply because the quality outstrips so many other wines from the region – and this Petit Chablis shames many ‘actual’ Chablis wines. Vigneron Frédéric Prain owns one block of vineyards, so chalky and stony as to appear like a white beach, on the boundary of the Chablis appellations. Indeed the vines for this Petit Chablis are adjacent to the 1er Cru Côte de Lechet. Forget any Petit prejudices and buy with confidence. Now - 2027

Clotilde Davenne, Cotes d'Auxerre Blanc, 2023

From one parcel of 65 year old, low-yielding Chardonnay vines on Kimmeridgian and Portlandian soils near St Bris just west of Chablis. Elegant and linear with impressive weight and concentration. Crisp citrus and apple fruit with stony minerality. Very long. Offers a wonderful alternative to both Chablis and Mâcon wines, being both alike and yet quite distinctive. Now - 2029

Jean-Marie Chaland, Macon Villages, Les Tilles, 2022

From a small, half a hectare parcel, on clay and limestone planted in the late 1960s. This is serious Mâcon. Jean-Marie Chaland’s wines are characterised by ripe, zesty fruit – our notes read white peach and quince compote – with notes of a saline minerality on the finish. A wine for classic fish dishes. Unoaked Burgundy Dozen

Summer isn’t summer without a case of proper unoaked white Burgundy. It’s still the best value Chardonnay on the planet, full of both varietal and terroir character and it goes superbly with everything from salmon to salads.

Four wines today - all of which are promoted in our current Summer List. Heading south down the Autoroute du Soleil (French’s motorway’s have better nicknames than ours) we start with Clotilde Davenne’s elegant and linear Bourgogne Côtes d’Auxerre, and the always popular (and really not very ‘petit’ at all) Petit Chablis from Domaine d’Elise.

After a couple of hours virtual driving we find two splendid Mâcons: Fichet’s terrific value Les 3 Terroirs from Burgy and Jean-Marie Chaland’s serious, intense Mâcon-Villages Les Tilles.

With the barometer set for warm and sunny for the foreseeable future, these are perfect wines for outdoor dining.

The case features three bottles of each of the four wines for £205, saving over £34 on normal pricing.

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
