Valle Frio, Pinot Noir, Maule, 2021
Many of you have already adopted their supple and fruity Pinot Noir as your go-to Pinot. Valle Frio is an offshoot of afamily-owned business with 19th century origins: Maule used to be the old heart of wine production within Chile. Pale hue. Pretty strawberry and cherry fruit. Surprisingly authentic – this exhibits both Pinot’s aromatics with attractive juiciness and pleasing lightly savoury hints. Very easy-drinking. Now-end 2025

Esk Valley, Pinot Noir, Marlborough, NZ, 2021
A bright and soft style of Pinot Noir from Marlborough; from vines growing on clay soils, giving a pleasing intensity to the fruit. Long notes of raspberry and red cherry with just a lick of sweetness from some time in French oak. Great charm. Now-2026

Errazuriz, Pinot Noir, Aconcagua Costa, 2022
Again, a brilliant example from vineyards on schist at Manzanar, just 12 kilometres from the cool Pacific. Combines the virtues of superclean, ripe Chilean fruit with a Burgundian freshness, restraint and tannin/acid spine. Perfumed cherries and raspberries. Now-2026

Domaine des Dieux, Josephine Pinot Noir, Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, 2020
As the vines here age, this wine is getting more refined: French oak, about a quarter new. A rich, velvety example, with overt raspberry and cherry fruit, wrapped in coffeescented oak. Lots of appealing fat. Terrific aromatics on a long finish. Classy and complete. Now-2026

When we first visited in 2003 the wineries, notably Hamilton Russell and Bouchard Finlayson, were all in the lower part of the valley, but more recently plantings at the top of the valley - higher, drier, with warmer...

Wickhams Road, Pinot Noir, Yarra Valley, 2023
Scent of dark plums, but in the mouth it’s all red fruits; cherries, raspberries, even a hint of cranberry, This is fresh and lively - there’s almost a crunch to it - but with an appealing savoury note too. Minimal tannin. It’s like a very approachable village Burgundy from a cool vintage. And it would drink really well with offal - liver, kidneys, sweetbreads - or light dishes dominated by mushrooms. All de-stemmed with no crushing. 30% new, 30% one year old and the rest in older barrels. Ruby bright. Red and black cherries, fringed by toast and vanilla. Very pure and elegant. Plenty of body for keeping. A banker, as ever. Now-2028
