Coruscant, Chardonnay, Vin de France, 2023
A new project from the brilliant Paul Maury (of Combe St.-Paul fame). A selection of fruit from their old vines in the foothills of the limestone rock of La Clape has been given extended lees ageing and the merest hint of oak influence. Appealing scent of white flowers, stone fruit and a 2hint of butter. Generous fruit - yellow plum and green melon - with that limestone bite and freshness. Splendid length for a wine at this price. Clearly not a cool climate Chardonnay but so winning....

Chardonnay
Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.
Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Talmard, Macon-Uchizy, 2023
Benjamin and Mallory Talmard have been making exemplary unoaked Chardonnay for a generation – and we have been shipping from them since the 2001 vintage. It’s not surprising this is such a popular unoaked Chardonnay. Lemon-fresh scent with a floral edge. Perfectly refreshing but also nicely rounded. Now-2026

The Burgundy Pyramid
Making sense of the complexity of the complexity of Burgundy isn’t easy.
Though Burgundy only comprises 5% of France’s vineyard area, it holds 100 different Appellations, 25% of the entire French total. There are no less than 5,000 growers, 85% of whom own less than 10 hectares, and four fifths of them make wine.

Jérémie Huchet, Muscadet, Les Quinze Hommees, 2022
One of Jérémie Huchet's "parcellaires", organically farmed, single vineyard wines. This is from vines in meagre sandy and stony soils over granite bedrock - known as the granite of Clisson. This is so exciting: creamy aromas are followed by a weighty, pear-accented mouthful cut by a vein of crystalline acidity. Intense and ageworthy. Muscadet like this deserves to be so much more respected and consumed. Now-2028

Loire Valley
In early February I undertook our annual visit to the wine fair in Angers, escaping the snow which engulfed much of the UK during that week.
This is the yearly opportunity for the vast majority of vignerons in the Loire valley to show off their latest offerings to the rest of the world. The early season’s weather in 2008 was not kind, with variously frost, hail and torrential...

Jean-Luc Meyer, Pinot Blanc, Alsace, 2023
A long-term favourite at SVS - we have been shipping this organic wine from the Meyer family in Eguisheim since the 2001 vintage. It always over delivers on flavour and texture. Dry, just, with attractive notes of red apple and pear. There is just a little weight on the palate and the finish is long and sustaining. Good with white meat but always an excellent aperitif. Alsace
The fascination of Alsace is the kaleidoscope of flavours - from bone dry to very sweet - delivered by unusual grape varieties planted in a very specific terroir.
The vineyards are strung in a narrow - less than 3km wide - band running for 60km. north-south along the eastern foothills of the Vosges mountains, west of the flat Rhine plain. The mountains, up to 1,000 metres in height,...

Domaine Vendome, Viognier, Le Puits des Mejeans, IGP Collines Rhodaniennes, 2023
From white clay soils on the slopes above Larnage: all goes into tank and the malolactic is blocked to preservefreshness. Bright peach and apricot fruit. The stone fruit notes sustain for a long time on the palate with just a noteof blossom to round them out. An altogether refreshing and elegant expression of Viognier.– it seems churlish to call this poor man’s Condrieu, but that’s accurate. Excellent as an aperitif or with crab and prawns. Now-2026

Francis Blanchet, Pouilly-Fumé, Les Pernets, 2023
The Blanchet family make such an authentic wine, so true to this Loire appellation, with bite and stony character, and always at a very fair price. Unagressive, gently floral scent. Bright citrus over a mineral acid thread. Silky mouthfeel and poise. Fresh and bone dry on the finish. Pair with anything from simply prepared white fish to smoked salmon or eel. Now-2026
