Languedoc-Roussillon

There’s something very complete about our annual offer of wines from the Languedoc and Roussillon: with whites, rosés and reds, and wonderful fortified wines, the Vins Doux Naturels which are such a speciality of the region, there should be something for all tastes. Secondly, there are wines for every budget; at every level we believe these wines continue to offer terrific...

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Corte Mainente, Pigno, Soave Classico, 2023

100% Garganega grown on red and black volcanic soils in a single vineyard in Pigno, known as one of the best terroirs in the hilly Classico zone and one of the offical crus recognised in June 2019.  Scent of pears. A ripe, almost lightly honeyed mouthful of lemon and ripe lime: reminds one of the flavour of the green Opal Fruits / Starburst. Lots of volume and concentration - and finishes with the characteristic Garganega almond note. Terrific. Now-2027.In 2019 we found a winner to work...

Corte Mainente

Soave, Italy

We have chosen a winner to work with in Soave with young Davide Mainente.

His family own 12 hectares of vines, both near the town (the Cengelle vineyard) and in the Classico hillside sites such as Pigno and Tenda.

His wines are winning rave reviews in Italy and here (Jancis Robinson described his 2017 Cengelle on jancisrobinson.com as "Chock-full of...

Garganega

Garganega is a white grape variety grown widely in the Veneto region of North East Italy where it is most famous for the production of Soave.

Though it can be inoffensively neutral, it has a distinct pea-pod character, and can deliver considerable weight and character.

Le Tende, Sabia, Veneto IGT Rosso, 2022

This is a new wine from this organic estate near the southeast corner of Lake Garda. 80% of Corvina, the best localgrape, is blended with 20% Merlot – the addition of the latter interloper makes it an IGT Rosso rather than a Bardolino. The Merlot gives it the lightest herbaceous accent on the floral nose, and also some pleasing flesh, but it’s otherwise lively in the mouth, silky, perfumed and graceful with a splendidly long finish. Perfect for a lighter veal dish.Now-2027

Domaine des Espiers, Cotes du Rhone, 2023

60% Grenache with 20% of each of Mourvèdre and Syrah, all in concrete only. “Vin Biologique et Nature” it says on the back label, emphasising Philippe Cartoux’s commitment to reducing sulphur in his wines. Classic, hearty, black-fruited and savoury CdR from densely planted, low yielding vines around Vacqueyras and Gigondas. Power but not without elegance. Now-2029

Domaine Fontanel, Maury Grenat, 2021

Made from a single parcel of 70 year-old Grenache vines, aged in barrel for 18 months, it retains its sweetness by the addition of grape spirit arresting fermentation. Glossy cherry and blackcurrant fruit with hints of Agen prunes. Softer and smoother than actual Port, it is one of the few wines in the world that goes brilliantly with chocolate. Now-2029
Vins Doux Naturels are made by stopping the fermentation of late picked, very ripe grapes, part way through its course, by the...

Domaine Fontanel

Tautavel, France

Things have changed at Domaine Fontanel, but with a sense of continuity. Elodie and Matthieu Collet bought the domaine from Pierre and Marie-Claude Fontaneil in 2017 and have already made a name for themselves, being elected no less than Vignerons de l'Année (Roussillon) du Guide Hachette 2019.

After both graduating as agricultural...

Grenache / Garnacha

Grenache grows well in hot, dry regions, though it can develop very high (15 degrees+) alcohol.

As such it is grown principally in Southern France and Spain (as Garnacha). It is usually blended with other varieties in the Southern Rhône and Languedoc (Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, Cinsaut and others).

Its flavour usually encompasses the...

Easy Easter Dozen

Don’t worry if you have not sorted your Easter wines yet - there is still time! We have put together an Easy Easter Dozen case for £170 , a saving of over £35 on our regular list prices. The cases includes a bottle of Laurens Blanquette de Limoux fizz, three x Soave Classico Pigno from the excellent Corte Mainente, three x Italian reds in the form of Le Tende’s superb Sabia cuvee from near Lake Garda, three x Côtes du Rhône from the impeccable Domaine de Espiers and, finally, a bottle of Fontanel’s Maury - a delightful sweet red that is fantastic with chocolate.

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
