Château Pierre Bise, Clos de Coulaine, Savennières 2009

1st February 2012

"The range is large and complex, and Papin goes to extraordinary lengths to give voice to every nuance of which they are capable. Look out, in particular, for his Sur Spilite red Anjou and Coteaux du Layon-Beaulieu Les Rouannières: the volcanic rock on which both are grown is the ‘pierre bise’ of the domaine name. But whatever the appellation and price point, this magnificent domaine will leave you with an intimate understanding of Anjou’s extraordinary intricacy and richness.

“One to try: Château Pierre Bise, Clos de Coulaine, Savennières 2009 **** 18/20. This wine is still in quiet infancy, but the graceful, sparely defined hawthorn scents bode well. The palate is rich, intense, floral and flamboyant, packed with chewy orchard fruit: a meditative aperitif, or a rich food partner. Natural, pure and articulate: virtuoso Chenin, and a sensorial synopsis of this great site."
