New wines from Jura: Domaine Frederic Lambert

We have been on the lookout for a Jura producer for a couple of years but finding the right mix of style, quality and price is easier said than done. That is until we met Marie Anne Lambert back in February. Marie Anne and husband Frédéric farm 7ha. of vines in Le Chateley, twenty minutes east of Arbois. Prior to setting up the domaine in 1993, Frédéric worked for the local wine board, the Société de Viticulture du Jura, for ten years and his knowledge of the region’s soils and terroirs is unmatched.

He put this experience to excellent use buying up tiny parcels of vines in exceptional locations. The focus is very much on the traditional Jurassien ‘sous voile’ style – whites made from Chardonnay and Savagnin aged under a thin film of yeast which gives a distinctive savoury, nutty character to the wines. That said, the more Burgundian Chardonnay Les Gryphees, named after a fossil found in the ancient vineyard soils, is a contender for our Wine of the Year so far – a stunning, serious wine with structure, minerality and fruit in perfect harmony. We’ve also shipped a small quantity of the exceptional Vin Jaune and some Trousseau – the region’s best red grape which produces very elegant, light wines.
