Yann Chave, Crozes-Hermitage, Le Rouvre, 2012
In Stock Now!
Named after a type of sessile oak; aged for 12 months in new, one and two year old demi-muids, 600 litre barrels. This comes from parcels of old vines on the very stony fields at Les Chassis, and is a very serious, mineral wine for ageing. Deep and inky. Again that roasted quality to the nose - what the French call “torréfaction”, with a mocha note. Very ripe and velvety: there’s grip there too, but the tannins are very soft. Blackcurrant. Quite tight now. At best: Now-2019
“Meaty and rich; greater range and heaviness than their generic Crozes. Despite that, delicate balance and body on the finish, with classic Syrah fruit - but not so much pepperiness. 17/ 20 2015-25”, Richard Hemming on www.jancisrobinson.com, 14th November 2014
“The 2012 Crozes Hermitage Rouvre offers impressive notes of black raspberries, cassis, crushed rock, spice-cake and licorice to go with a thrillingly textured palate. Voluptuous, rich and mouth filling, yet still fresh, balanced and nicely focused, it should drink nicely on release and over the following 6-8 years. (90-93/100)”, Jeb Dunnock, The Wine Advocate, December 2013
Our longer-established customers will know that we have been working with Yann ever since the 1998 vintage, when he was first taking over from father Bernard. He swiftly established a reputation as among the top growers in the large and heterogeneous Crozes-Hermitage appellation, and he continues to be a leader. He was very happy with 2012: his own sternest critic, he thought it was a “très belle année”: he really likes the more traditional profile and moderate alcohol of slightly cooler years like 2012.
