Yann Chave, Crozes-Hermitage, 2012

Bright purple. As usual, it’s difficult to believe this wine is unoaked: there’s a roasted note to the aromas. Lots of pure blackcurrant and black cherry flavours, so ripe as to evince winegums, yet also mildly wild. Merest hint of tannin, perfectly cleansing on the finish. This is a perfumed, silky northern Rhône Syrah which one could enjoy almost immediately - just decant to give it some air. At best: Now-2018
“Quite closed nose, but beautifully defined palate. Sumptuous, smooth, really pure blackcurrant juice character. Dark, compact, savoury finish - really worth keeping. 17/20 2014 -2022” , Richard Hemming on www.jancisrobinson.com, 14th November 2014
Our longer-established customers will know that we have been working with Yann ever since the 1998 vintage, when he was first taking over from father Bernard. He swiftly established a reputation as among the top growers in the large and heterogeneous Crozes-Hermitage appellation, and he continues to be a leader. He was very happy with 2012: his own sternest critic, he thought it was a “très belle année”: he really likes the more traditional profile and moderate alcohol of slightly cooler years like 2012.
