The Sax boys name one of their Kamptal Grüner Veltliners Zwillingslauser, which loosely translates as the naughty twins.  We shipped it for the first time last summer; and now it’s been praised twice in the press in the last month.

First up, David Williams recommended it as a wine to accompany the Christmas roast dinner – whether with turkey, cauliflower or a mushroom-based nut roast: "..something with plenty of acidity to refresh and cut through... Weingut Sax's scintillating, finely balanced, citrus tangy, pear-apple fleshy beauty of a dry white", The Observer Magazine, 20th December 2020

Now top critic Matthew Jukes has joined the fan club in the latest Money Week (January 15th 2021):  "Grüner Veltliner is a fabulous white grape and many of us are familiar with its charms.  Not long ago you could only find this cheeky grape on trips to Austria, but nowadays most supermarkets stock budget versions and it is fair to say that they rarely let you down if you are after competently-made, dry, perky white wines with a little more flavour intrigue than your average Sauvignon Blanc or Chenin Blanc.  If you climb to the top of the Grüner ladder the wines are often rich and heady and while gastronomic and intellectually challenging they are not particularly refreshing.  In between the eight quid High Street offerings and Hirtzberger (my favourite estate) at around the forty pound-mark, there are hundreds of largely unfamiliar estates making useful wines.  This week, I have found a relatively inexpensive Grüner for you with a tremendous amount of character and flair.  Zwillingslauser translates as naughty twins, and twins Max and Rudolph Sax, are the winemakers behind this delicious wine.  A family business since 1660, it’s fair to say that there is no shortage of experience here and so I urge you to seek out this particularly rewarding wine.  Smooth, pure, layered and silky, the pear and apple theme is balanced perfectly by zesty acidity and it will be sure to shock you with its style and panache".

Not from a named vineyard - Zwillingslauser translates as "naughty twins" - but based on fruit from Ried Kittmannsberg, a warm south-facing site with granitic soils incorporating feldspar, quartz and mica. These retain heat well, which suits Grüner. Lovely scent of ripe pears – which fits with a fully ripe palate of pears, sherbet lemons and hints of spice. Thrillingly fine acidity. A winner. Now-2023
