Red Bandol is usually backward, but this is already expressive, showing a nose of Asian spice on black fruit; with impressive, inky concentration, well-covered tannin and attractive savoury elements. A traditionally framed example, perfect to accompany robust meat dishes like venison or a local daube provençale. Now-2024
Bandol is an unusual appellation in the south as both rosés and reds need to be based on at least 50% Mourvèdre. This grape, by repute, likes to have its feet in water and its head in the sun - so it thrives on the moisture retentive clay soils and the long hours of sunshine in Bandol.
With our enthusiasm for the Desblache family's exquisite rosé, we sometimes forget their classic and robust red Bandol. Based on Mourvèdre, this is a terrific wine for hearty food, and can be kept for several years.
