Corte Mainente, Soave, Vigna Cengelle, 2023

From 90% Garganega (with 10% Trebbiano di Soave) on calcareous soils near the cellar, Cengelle is brilliant this vintage: a hot, dry summer and a couple of days of skin contact have lent it extra concentration and texture. With a glint of green in the glass,  and a burst of ripe citrus perfume, it’s limpidly fresh, redolent of greengages and lime. Floral and exuberantly fruity, this offers a ripe and friendly glass, lovely to drink on its own or with a wide range of light dishes....

Corte Mainente

Soave, Italy

We have chosen a winner to work with in Soave with young Davide Mainente.

His family own 12 hectares of vines, both near the town (the Cengelle vineyard) and in the Classico hillside sites such as Pigno and Tenda.

His wines are winning rave reviews in Italy and here (Jancis Robinson described his 2017 Cengelle on jancisrobinson.com as "Chock-full of...

Garganega

Garganega is a white grape variety grown widely in the Veneto region of North East Italy where it is most famous for the production of Soave.

Though it can be inoffensively neutral, it has a distinct pea-pod character, and can deliver considerable weight and character.

L'Estabel, Clairette de Languedoc, Fulcrand Cabanon, 2023

“Lemon and thyme on the nose and whistling with intensity on the palate. Acidity vibrating like harp strings. Acacia blossom, Amalfi lemon, wonderfully fragrant herbs and then something a little buttery but lightly bitter, like cold salted butter flecked with lemon zest. Distinct character. A great summer wine – I can just imagine having this with fish and chips at the seaside, somehow. GV. 16.5/20”, Tamlyn Currin, Languedoc Round-up, Summer 2024, jancisrobinson.com, 28th June 2024

Languedoc-Roussillon

There’s something very complete about our annual offer of wines from the Languedoc and Roussillon: with whites, rosés and reds, and wonderful fortified wines, the Vins Doux Naturels which are such a speciality of the region, there should be something for all tastes. Secondly, there are wines for every budget; at every level we believe these wines continue to offer terrific...

Grüner Veltliner

Grüner Veltliner (Green Veltliner) is a white wine grape variety grown primarily in Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. The leaves of the grape vine are five-lobed with bunches that are long but compact, and deep green grapes that ripen in mid-late October in the Northern Hemisphere.

In 2008, Grüner Veltliner plantations in...

Wickhams Road, Chardonnay, Yarra Valley, 2022

Forget of those out of date preconceptions of yellow, oaky, unsubtle Australian Chardonnays – this is cool-climate, pale, super-fresh, lightly oaked Chardonnay which would appeal to Chablis lovers. Enticing citrus and cream aromas. Crystalline bite’ and so much verve and refinement.  Splendidly long. Now-2027
The Wickhams Road wines are made by Franco D'Anna at the Hoddles Creek winery in the Upper Yarra Valley.  Franco D’Anna’s wines are hugely applauded both in...

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Sur, Carmenere, Maule, 2023

For a modestly priced wine this shows varietal typicity, that combination of blackcurrant fruit with herbal elements which marks Carmenère. The aromas show that characteristic combination of berries with currant leaf. This offers a light and fresh mouthful of blackcurrant and blueberry. Pure, uncomplicated and finishes brightly. Will stand up to spicy food well – there was a push a decade ago to recommend Carmenère as the best red grape to match with curries. Now-2026

Le Lupinaie, Morellino di Scansano, 2022

It's not just English people who long to live on a farm in Tuscany - in 1991  Aldo Galimberti, tired of the city, realised the same dream, buying an old farmhouse near Montiano in the heart of the Maremma. Now his family farm 25 hectares of vines on rolling hills just inland from the Tuscan coast.
We also ship the family's delicious Ciliegiolo, but their principal wine is their Morellino (= Sangiovese) di Scansano (a town just south-east of Grosseto).  Sangiovese is known...

Domaine Lagneau, Regnie, Vieilles Vignes, Cuvee Gerard, 2022

One of our long-term favourites, from 60-100 year old vines on the granitic hills just to the south of Morgon. Gérard is the father chez Lagneau. As ever - we have been shipping this ever since the 2001 vintage - this is terrific. The depth of colour, intensity of bramble and black cherry flavours and real stuffing is rarely seen in Beaujolais at this price. Juicy and stimulating. Now-2027

Beaujolais

"…if red wine can be nubile, this red wine is" - Andrew Jefford, in The New France

That immediate fruitiness of the Gamay grape, allied to refreshing acidity, moderate alcohol levels - usually 12.5 degrees to 13 degrees - and ability to be served cool (don’t overchill, or you won’t taste anything), makes Beaujolais the definitive summer...

Gamay is Beaujolais! Lovely medium to light red wine, with fresh acidity for summer drinking with great potential for ageing in good vintages.

Also planted in: the Loire; odd new plantings in New World, e.g. New Zealand

Simon's Swansong Case

This is a personal pick of my favourite wines of the year. Three qualities mark this selection: first, pure and generous fruit – no excessive oak or old-fashioned muddiness; second, moderate alcohol – the average of the six is under 13%; and, important to me as I like to see our money going into sympathetic pockets, all made by wonderful people working in family-owned businesses. Half - the Soave, Wickhams Road Chardonnnay and Regnié - are year-in and year-out favourites, whilst the other three were all shipped for the first time last year.

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
