Loire Valley

In early February I undertook our annual visit to the wine fair in Angers, escaping the snow which engulfed much of the UK during that week.

This is the yearly opportunity for the vast majority of vignerons in the Loire valley to show off their latest offerings to the rest of the world. The early season’s weather in 2008 was not kind, with variously frost, hail and torrential...

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Corte Mainente, Soave, Vigna Cengelle, 2023

From 90% Garganega (with 10% Trebbiano di Soave) on calcareous soils near the cellar, Cengelle is brilliant this vintage: a hot, dry summer and a couple of days of skin contact have lent it extra concentration and texture. With a glint of green in the glass,  and a burst of ripe citrus perfume, it’s limpidly fresh, redolent of greengages and lime. Floral and exuberantly fruity, this offers a ripe and friendly glass, lovely to drink on its own or with a wide range of light dishes....

Soave, Italy

We have chosen a winner to work with in Soave with young Davide Mainente.

His family own 12 hectares of vines, both near the town (the Cengelle vineyard) and in the Classico hillside sites such as Pigno and Tenda.

His wines are winning rave reviews in Italy and here (Jancis Robinson described his 2017 Cengelle on jancisrobinson.com as "Chock-full of...

L'Estabel, Clairette de Languedoc, Fulcrand Cabanon, 2023

“Lemon and thyme on the nose and whistling with intensity on the palate. Acidity vibrating like harp strings. Acacia blossom, Amalfi lemon, wonderfully fragrant herbs and then something a little buttery but lightly bitter, like cold salted butter flecked with lemon zest. Distinct character. A great summer wine – I can just imagine having this with fish and chips at the seaside, somehow. GV. 16.5/20”, Tamlyn Currin, Languedoc Round-up, Summer 2024, jancisrobinson.com, 28th June 2024

Piekenierskloof, Grenache Blanc, 2023

Piekenierskloof (the name of a ward, the smallest geographical unit in the South African regional classification, as well as the estate owned by two brothers) is fortunate to have a great heritage of old Rhône varieties, red and white. This is from bush vines planted in 1987 on koffieklip and loam; and fermented in old oak vats. This is amazingly vibrant this vintage.

Esk Valley, Pinot Gris, Hawkes Bay, NZ, 2022

Founded by Englishman Robert Bird in 1933, Esk Valley is an old estate by Kiwi standards. This Pinot Gris is from twenty year old vines grown on gravel river terraces formed by the Ngaruroro River. The warm days and cool nights of this region create a well-rounded and perfumed example. Notes of acacia and conference pear greet you with delicious red apple following. The acidity balances these rich flavours beautifully. Now-2025

Bright citrus (lemon and lime) and a small hint of something herbal, this is vibrant and refreshing. There is a little texture on the palate, the warmth of the vintage really shines through. Delicious on its own and it would be perfect with simple seafood dishes. Ideally serve cold with a plate of oysters! Now - 2025

Jardin Privado, Cabernet Sauvignon, Central Valley, 2021

The “secret garden” is the label for Valle Frio’s superior wines. Whilst labelled as Central Valley, this is based on fruit from Maipo, amongst the best zones for Cabernet in Chile. Strikingly pure blackcurrant perfume. Not a fruit bomb, but appealingly balanced, with a bright cut to the black fruit. With well-integrated oak and some decent tannins, this may keep extremely well for a wine at this price – and could make a pleasant surprise in a year or two. Now-2028

Chateau Beauregard Ducasse, Graves, 2020

From the far south of the Graves near Langon, a splendidly suave and traditional Bordeaux, now being run by son Albert with help from his father and uncle. 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon; and about 20% in barrels. Deeply hued. Youthful but already delicious and interesting: red cherry and berry heart enlivened by a hint of liquorice. Lovely ripeness without heat. Graceful, with just the right support of gentle tannins and restrained Graves character. Now-2028

La Purisima, Filarmonia, Yecla, 2022

MSM stands for Monastrell, Syrah and Merlot, 34% of the former and 33% of the others. Certified organic & vegan, this is a crowd pleaser, offering a gush of very ripe fruit - plum, blackberry and dark cherry - all underpinned by hints of vanilla and cinnamon. The ripe Syrah brings a certain sweetness. There's a pleasing mouth-coating quality too, with just a little well integrated tannin.
