Jardin Privado, Cabernet Sauvignon/ Carmenere, Central Valley, 2021
Chilean red blends mystifyingly sell less well than wines labelled as single varieties – even though comparably styled wines from Bordeaux are always blended. There’s a lot to recommend in this pairing, with the intriguing herbal notes from the Carmenère spicing the rich, dark Cabernet fruit. A big, dense wine, almost chewy - delivers alot for the price. Domaine des Espiers, Cotes du Rhone, 2023
60% Grenache with 20% of each of Mourvèdre and Syrah, all in concrete only. “Vin Biologique et Nature” it says on the back label, emphasising Philippe Cartoux’s commitment to reducing sulphur in his wines. Classic, hearty, black-fruited and savoury CdR from densely planted, low yielding vines around Vacqueyras and Gigondas. Power but not without elegance. Now-2029

Quinta do Convento, Vinho Tinto, DOP Douro, 2020
The Douro region specialises in field blends of ancient vines – many estates are currently in the process of having the vines analysed. From granite soils, this is 34% old vine field blend, 31% Tinta Barroca, 21% Touriga Nacional and 14% Tinta Roriz; 70% of which spend 16 months in second and third fill French barrels. Intensely dark profile here, with a delicious core of brambly fruit dominating. There are some subtle gamey notes along with a little cigar box perfume. Rich and velvety...

El Lagar de Isilla, Ribera Del Duero, Crianza, 2020
90% Tempranillo, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Albillo Mayor from vines up to 70 years old. This spends a year in 225-300 litre barrels. Really balanced and intense. Wonderful dark and red fruit is entwined. Blackcurrant, fresh strawberry and plum with a dash of vanilla and cinnamon. Classic dusty tannins underpin the fruit. This is Ribera del Duero at its best.
