Lequin-Colin, Bourgogne Chardonnay, Back To The Roots, 2022

One of our benchmark wines, named because François Lequin bestows on this wine the traditional treatment given to much smarter appellations From organic grapes grown near Santenay, it’s 100% barrel fermented, with 10% new oak; given regular lees stirring to develop texture and breadth; and bottled without fining or filtration.
Hazelnuts; plus a lovely burst of lemon tinged with honey; attractive fat and length. Always punches above its weight and always a bargain. Now-2028

The Burgundy Pyramid

Making sense of the complexity of the complexity of Burgundy isn’t easy.

Though Burgundy only comprises 5% of France’s vineyard area, it holds 100 different Appellations, 25% of the entire French total.  There are no less than 5,000 growers, 85% of whom own less than 10 hectares, and four fifths of them make wine.

René Lequin-Colin

Santenay, France

This 9 hectare family domaine, which dates back over 300 years, has a lovely range of vineyards, deriving from the marital conjoining of Lequins from Santenay and Colins from Chassagne-Montrachet.

We think he makes no less than seventeen wines, though some in very small quantities, for example just one specially made small barrel of Batard-Montrachet!...

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Domaine Verzier, St Joseph Blanc, Granit, 2023

From halves of Marsanne and Roussanne, 90% aged in barrel and 10% in clay amphorae. Simply stunning and complete in every way; one of the most exciting whites we have introduced in years.
Aromas of cream and yellow Mirabelle plums. Initially silkily subtle, this opens out boldly, showing apricot and plum flavours with that characteristic fat Marsanne texture. Terrific, long and stony finish. Now-2029
The Verzier family has owned land here since 1828, but only in 1988 did...

Huber-Verdereau, Bourgogne Cote d'Or Pinot Noir, Les Constances, 2022

This bio-dynamic Pinot Noir, sourced from Thiébault Huber’s plots in the Côte de Beaune near Volnay, drinks like a much grander and more expensive red Burgundy – just earlier, as it’s already lovely. Now-2027
Charming scent of summer berries. Delicious attack: this feels complete and ready, offering winning ripeness, a little velvety fat in the mouth, some spice and incipient savouriness. Would be great with the Christmas turkey!

Domaine Huber-Verdereau

Meursault, France

At Stone, Vine & Sun we are so proud to have introduced Thiébault Verdereau’s wines to the UK market.

His is a fascinating story. When his maternal grandfather Raoul Verdereau retired in 1974, his family decided to keep his three hectares of vines but not farm them.

Thiébault, born and raised in Alsace, became a sommelier but...

Chateau du Glana, Saint-Julien, 2019

Glana is beautifully sited - between the illustrious names of Beychevelle and Ducru Beaucaillou. The Meffre family bought the estate in 1961 and enlarged the vineyard area with purchases from Château Lagrange. Even after considerable investment Glana remains an oasis of value amidst its neighbours. The hot summer of 2019enabled the family to up the % of Cabernet Sauvignon to 72%, with 28% Merlot. Ludovic and Julien Meffre considered this vintage “in line with some of the greatest”.

Domaine des Garriguettes, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, La Borne, 2021

A blend of 95% old vine Grenache and 5% Mourvèdre, farmed organically (in conversion), which has spent 18 months in 600l. old oak barrels. This is a wonderful winter wine.
Bright, intense strawberry and raspberry notes build into something more substantive and complex. Grilled thyme and rosemary are mixed into this symphony with just a hint of something animal in the background. This starts Mozart but finishes Mahler. A delicious wine of immense warmth and depth. Grenache / Garnacha

Grenache / Garnacha

Grenache grows well in hot, dry regions, though it can develop very high (15 degrees+) alcohol.

As such it is grown principally in Southern France and Spain (as Garnacha). It is usually blended with other varieties in the Southern Rhône and Languedoc (Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, Cinsaut and others).

Its flavour usually encompasses the...
