Domaine Verzier, St Joseph Blanc, Granit, 2023

From halves of Marsanne and Roussanne, 90% aged in barrel and 10% in clay amphorae. Simply stunning and complete in every way; one of the most exciting whites we have introduced in years. Aromas of cream and yellow Mirabelle plums. Initially silkily subtle, this opens out boldly, showing apricot and plum flavours with that characteristic fat Marsanne texture. Terrific, long and stony finish. Now-2029
The Verzier family has owned land here since 1828, but only in 1988 did father...

Domaine Verzier, St Joseph, Empreinte 2022

From light sandy and pebbley soils over granite at around 300m.  100% Syrah into 500l. demi-muids for a year. Pure, black fruit perfume with a toasty edge. This is very youthful, with generous mass and fine tannins to the fore; but also vivid black cherry and brambly fruit with a black liquorice note. Great freshness and balance promise a good future, but already delicious decanted. Now-2031
“Thoroughly engaging with masses of enticing dark fruit underscored by a flourish of...

Shiraz / Syrah

Shiraz / Syrah

Powerful, black-fruited, often aged in oak, syrah/Shiraz comes in varying styles but at the top (such as Hermitage) can be spectacular and very long-lived.

There is no question that Syrah is now the most fashionable red grape for new plantings in many New World countries, especially South Africa and Chile.

Domaine Verzier, Condrieu, Authentic, 2022

From a terraced plot named Chante-Perdrix (the singing partridge), “très granitique” as Maxime Verzier says, between 200m. and 330m. on the Izeras hillside. There’s nothing like Condrieu – in no other Viognier does one see the tension between pure apricot flavours and that dry minerality.
Pale gold. Scent of honeysuckle. Pure heart of apricots and cream. Subtle oak framing. Honeyed and appealingly viscuous. Finish just lifted by a saline hint. A wonderful wine to pair with...

Viognier

Characteristics

  • Fickle grape to grow, subject to problems in the flowering and setting of fruit
  • Best picked late and fully ripe, with high alcohol, at least 13.5 degree
  • ...but can be too fat and overblown if grown in too hot temperatures
  • Very aromatic, with scents of apricot and...

Domaine Verzier, St Joseph, La Madone 2022

From 50 year old vines around the cellar near the stature of the Madonna.18 months in demi-muids, 20% new.  This is more savoury and sauvage than Empreinte, more Cornas-like: damson-fruited, mildly balsamic and with the density of low-yielding old vines. If Empreinte would be best paired with a simple steak, this needs a daube of beef, well-aged, dark meat slow-braised in red wine. Now-2030
“A veritable hive of activity encompassing ripe mulberry and blackberry fruit and a...

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
