Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Francis a parent of Cabernet Sauvignon.

A cross of it with Sauvignon Blanc resulted in Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc tends to be softer and has less tannins than Cabernet Sauvignon, although the two can be difficult to distinguish. Many of the red wines of the Loire are primarily Cabernet Franc.

Château Moncets, Lalande de Pomerol. 2019

A smartly labelled right bank Bordeaux; 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc, which goes into 1/3 new oak and 2/3 first fill barrels. Coming into its own now, with just a little savouriness and spice notes on the red fruits. Opens out appealingly. Balanced, not ine least overdone. Now-2028

"Transparent garnet. Pale rim. Light and very fruity nose. A little simple but delivers lots of pleasure. There's a hint of dried plums. Rich start, dry finish. Perhaps just a little hole in the middle but the persistence is impressive. 16/20", Jancis Robinson, MW, jancisrobinson.com, 17th February 2022

"Same owners as Ch Chambrun, and a slightly more old school Lalande de Pomerol interpretation of the vintage, meaning more red fruits, juicy with fresh acidities and higher floral aromatics. 90/100" Jane Anson, Decanter.com, 25th May 2020.

A properrty going back to to 1770, Moncets is undergoing a programme of investment and revitalisation, including conversion to organic viticulture beginning in 2018. There's a high (45 year old) average vine age.

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
