Talosa, Chianti Colli Senesi, 2021

Talosa is principally a producer of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. This comes in part from the younger vines in Montepulciano vineyards near the hill town; 85% Sangiovese with 12% Canaiolo and 3% Mammolo. Pretty red fruit perfume. Fresh, juicy, correct, with just a hint of Sangiovese’s savouriness. Perfect with a pork chop or a juicy burger. Now-2025

Taliano, Barbera d'Alba, A Bon Rendre, 2022

A bon rendre - it delivers you goodness. About 1/3 of the wine is aged in old vats. Lovely purple hue. This is crafted in a supple, easy-drinking style, with forward and pretty raspberry and curranty fruit, attractively pulpy, with just a nudge of tannin. A crowd-pleaser. Now-2026
The brothers Alberto and Ezio Taliano, third generation growers, make wines which are transparent, true to the grapes and vineyards, and offer excellent value in an area where prices are often challenging....

Michele Taliano

Montà d'Alba, Italy

The brothers Alberto and Ezio Taliano, third-generation growers, lack land in the grandest Piedmont sites, with 13 hectares assembled over quite a wide area, largely in Roero, which is just to the north of the river Tanaro, but also across the river in Langhe, source of their Nebbiolo d’Alba and Barbaresco.

But their wines are transparent,...

Le Tende, Bardolino Classico, 2022

The principal wine here. It’s a very superior Bardolino, for two reasons: a high - 80% - proportion of the superior Corvina grape, accompanied by 20% Rondinella; and eight days maceration on the skins gives considerable texture. Quite soft and pale in tone, it offers up a charming perfume of red cherries; and then a pretty mouthful of red fruit. Light and juicy, delightfully ripe but not in the least sweet, this has a magical poise and purity. The 2020 vintage was a Tre Bicchieri winner,...

Le Lupinaie, Ciliegiolo, Rosso Maremma, 2022

For years we have hunted for a Ciliegiolo – this grape is, according to the latest genetic analysis, a parent of Sangiovese, and it’s worth seeking out, in particular in its principal homes of the Maremma on the Tuscan coast and around Narni in southern Umbria.  The name translates as “cherry” and never has a grape been more accurately named: it’s cherry scented and crushed cherry flavoured – and a particular type of black cherry, not sweet but dark and fleshy. This opens out...

Fiorano, I Paoli Sangiovese, Marche IGT, 2023

This is fast becoming one of our best-loved reds: light and fresh, but with plenty of ripe red fruit concentration too.  Really exemplifies Sangiovese's enticing cherry flavours. Pure, long finish. Now-2027
We started working with Paolo Beretta and Paola Massi, (he formerly a dentist and she a research pharmacologist) introducing their wines to this country in 2015, with immediate success. Their wines exemplify perfectly the virtues of small-scale - they tend just 5 hectares of...

Fiorano

Cossignano, Marche, Italy

We started working with Paolo Beretta (formerly a dentist) and Paola Massi (a research pharmacologist) in 2015, with immediate success.

Their wines exemplify perfectly the virtues of small-scale - they tend just 10 hectares of vines - organic cultivation. All exhibit an entrancing purity of fruit, and all are bottled with minimal sulphur...

I Fabbri, Chianti Classico, Lamole, 2021

Susanna Grassi’s Chiantis are so graceful. Her vineyards, in the Lamole subzone of Greve, are amongst the highest in Chianti Classico: here about 450-680m. of altitude brings freshness to the grapes. Susanna’s wines are crafted in a traditional, low oak style -and as such they age gracefully - but she is also dedicated to organic cultivation, and we think that brings an unusual purity and elegance. 100% Sangiovese, from some of the highest vineyards, all in concrete tank. A lovely,...

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
