Domaine Montangeron, Beaujolais Villages, 2023

The reputation of the whole region of Beaujolais was badly damaged by the swill of Beaujolais Nouveau that flooded overseas markets in the 1980s - only now is it beginning to recover. This is the new model Beaujolais - fully ripe and easy-drinking but with inimitable local character too. Now-2026

Beaujolais

"…if red wine can be nubile, this red wine is" - Andrew Jefford, in The New France

That immediate fruitiness of the Gamay grape, allied to refreshing acidity, moderate alcohol levels - usually 12.5 degrees to 13 degrees - and ability to be served cool (don’t overchill, or you won’t taste anything), makes Beaujolais the definitive summer...

Gamay

Gamay is Beaujolais! Lovely medium to light red wine, with fresh acidity for summer drinking with great potential for ageing in good vintages.

Also planted in: the Loire; odd new plantings in New World, e.g. New Zealand

Domaine Lagneau, Beaujolais-Villages, Cuvee Jeannine, 2022

This is from ancient (60-100 year old) vines on steep schist and granite slopes in Quincié-en-Beaujolais, in the line of the Cru Villages and one of the best terroirs for Beaujolais-Villages. Deep purple. All black cherry and blueberry, juicy, but with remarkable substance too from the old vines. Lots going on, alive and energetic. Now-2026

Domaine Lagneau, Regnie, Vieilles Vignes, Cuvee Gerard, 2022

One of our long-term favourites, from 60-100 year old vines on the granitic hills just to the south of Morgon. Gérard is the father chez Lagneau. As ever - we have been shipping this ever since the 2001 vintage - this is terrific. The depth of colour, intensity of bramble and black cherry flavours and real stuffing is rarely seen in Beaujolais at this price. Juicy and stimulating. Now-2027
Régnié is arguably the least known of all the Beaujolais Crus; it was the last to be given...

La Chapelle des Bois, Fleurie, Grand Pre, 2022

Fleurie has an association with “flowery” – but the best wines can have substance too. Bright youthful purple. Vibrant red-berried and black-cherried fruit. Very traditional example, showing a lively bite and enough fruit tannins to accompany food well. Now-2025
Cru (from the 10 Cru villages) Beaujolais remains undervalued. The levity and charm of juicy Gamay is out of fashion presumably because people still hold bad memories of thin Beaujolais Nouveau. But with warmer summers...

Lagneau, Morgon Vieilles Vignes, 2022

Glorious fruit. Really glorious. Generous flavours of raspberry, red cherry and blueberry abound. There’s structure, built on fine tannins and lively acidity, but this is a back note to the intense array of fruit on offer. With power and suavity, this is a great all rounder: it can be enjoyed on its own but will be an excellent match to red meats and game. Didier Lagneau considers the wines of Morgon as the most elegant of the Crus. Now-2027

Domaine Montangeron, Moulin-a-Vent, 2022

Moulin-à-Vent ranks amongst the finest of the Cru villages, with vines growing on distinctive soils of crumbling pink granite cut by manganese seams and quartz. Deeply coloured. Blackfruited, with a blackcurrant crunch. Very pure and poised. Delicious sucrosité on the finish. Intense and polished – and should keep well. Now-2028

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
