Valle Frio, Pinot Noir, Maule, 2021

Valle Frio is an offshoot of a family-owned business with 19th century origins: Maule used to be the old heart of wine production within Chile. Ownership of 300 hectares of vineyards in Maule and their own modern winery deliver total control of production and economies of scale. Many of you have already adopted their supple and fruity Pinot Noir as your go-to Pinot.

Sur, Carmenere, Valle Central, 2023

For a modestly priced wine this shows varietal typicity, that combination of blackcurrant fruit with herbal elements which marks Carmenère. Full-flavoured, with plenty of weight, this over-delivers impressively. Will stand up to spicy food well – there was a push a decade ago to recommend Carmenère as the best red grape to match with curries. Now-2026

A mid weight, expressive pure Cabernet. Splendid deep hue. Hint of chocolatey oak on an overtly blackcurranty scent. Impressive concentration at the price. Now-2026

Jardin Privado, Cabernet Sauvignon, Central Valley, 2021

The “secret garden” is the label for Valle Frio’s superior wines. Whilst labelled as Central Valley, this is based on fruit from Maipo, amongst the best zones for Cabernet in Chile. Strikingly pure blackcurrant perfume. Not a fruit bomb, but appealingly balanced, with a bright cut to the black fruit. With well-integrated oak and some decent tannins, this may keep extremely well for a wine at this price – and could make a pleasant surprise in a year or two. Now-2028

Jardin Privado, Cabernet Sauvignon/ Carmenere, Central Valley, 2021

Chilean red blends mystifyingly sell less well than wines labelled as single varieties – even though comparably styled wines from Bordeaux are always blended. There’s a lot to recommend in this pairing, with the intriguing herbal notes from the Carmenère spicing the rich, dark Cabernet fruit. A big, dense wine, almost chewy. Now-2027

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
