The Burgundy Pyramid

Making sense of the complexity of the complexity of Burgundy isn’t easy.

Though Burgundy only comprises 5% of France’s vineyard area, it holds 100 different Appellations, 25% of the entire French total.  There are no less than 5,000 growers, 85% of whom own less than 10 hectares, and four fifths of them make wine.

Domaine Faiveley,Latricieres-Chambertin, Grand Cru, Burgundy EP 2022 (3 bottles)

The southernmost Grand Cru in Gevrey, and, according to Clive Coates, the name implies poor, in the sense of infertile, as the marl is very thin over a rocky base. Of the three Grand Crus we offer, this is the most ethereal. Incredibly expressive red fruit is on show along with a delicate and perfumed nose. The persistence and balance of the flavours on show is excellent. A jewel. 2026-2038

“Cask sample. Pale garnet. Rather beautiful complex nose and beautiful balance on the palate. Long and a real grip on the palate (by which I mean impression rather than astringency). This showcases the delicacy of top-quality burgundy deliciously. 18/20. 2027-43”, Jancis Robinson, MW, jancisrobinson.com, 8th December 2023.

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
