The Burgundy Pyramid

Making sense of the complexity of the complexity of Burgundy isn’t easy.

Though Burgundy only comprises 5% of France’s vineyard area, it holds 100 different Appellations, 25% of the entire French total.  There are no less than 5,000 growers, 85% of whom own less than 10 hectares, and four fifths of them make wine.

Domaine Faiveley, Mazis Chambertin, Grand Cru, Burgundy EP 2022 (3 bottles)

We tasted nine grand Crus from the Côte de Nuits chez Faiveley – and this was arguably the most impressive. Remarkably high average vine age in this northernmost Grand Cru in the Côte de Nuits, some planted between 1930 and 1945, delivers fruit of amazing concentration. Brooding and a little closed on tasting but the brilliant potential lurking beneath the surface is apparent. Fulsome notes of red cherry and strawberry are there along with defined tannins. This will take time to develop, but it will be a superlative wine when ready. 2027-2040

“Cask sample. Solid, earthy nose. Broad palate with intense redcurrant fruit and some polished tannins to take it through to old age. Extremely long. Impressive! Just more of a coiled spring than the Latricières. 17.5++/20. 2028-45”, Jancis Robinson, MW, jancisrobinson.com, 8th December 2023.

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
