La Combe Saint-Paul, Rolle IGP Pays d'Oc, 2022
The Maury's Rolle ( formerly known as Vermentino, same wine!) has become one of our benchmark wines, sold in splendid volumes to our private customers and Michelin starred restaurants alike. Open, stone fruited attack gives way to a more gentle, pine-scented, well-textured mid-palate. Fruity but finishes dry. This is a fine all-rounder, as good an aperitif as with mediterranean fish or vegetable dishes. Now-2024

La Clape, France
Paul and Line Maury might be our youngest producers but winemaking runs in the genes.
Paul’s grandparents and great grandparents were winemakers specialising in single varietal wines, and we list his fine examples of Vermentino, Chardonnay and Viognier.
In 2008 Paul came across the opportunity to buy vines on La Clape and create his own domaine....

Las Colinas del Ebro, Garnatxa Blanca, Terra Alta, 2022
100% organically farmed (and certified) white Grenache from clay/limestone vineyards about 500 metres up (Terra Alta = highlands) in Catalonia. Here the altitude brings cool nights; and a dry wind known as El Cierzo keeps the vines healthy. This has become one of our best regarded sub £12 wines – and it would cost at least 50% more if it came from the Rhône. It’s such a useful all-rounder, light enough to enjoy on its own but also not so fruity that one can’t enjoy it with a wide...

100% Picquepoul from this now-fashionable appellation. This local grape has the advantage of being slow-ripening: picked after the heat of summer has passed it retains freshness and flavour. In the old Occitan tongue Picpoul means “lip-stinger”, due to the grape’s natural acidity, but this wine is a lot friendlier than that: look on it as the Muscadet of the Mediterranean, albeit with more heft and flavour. There (and in Parisian bistros) it's drunk with the local oysters and other...

Cape Atlantic Sauvignon Blanc, Western Cape, 2022
About two thirds from the young Sauvignon parcels at high altitude Cederberg, plus a third from the Ghost Corner vineyards at Elim near the southernmost tip of Africa – hence the gannet on the label. Cederberg
South Africa
The redoubtable David Nieuwoudt took over the Cederberg estate from his father in 1997.
We first visited David in 2003, when he was in the midst of his planting programme, and have worked with him ever since then.
The Cederberg vineyards here are 1100-1150 metres up in the Cederberg mountains, most of them on dramatic shale slopes. Good natural rainfall,...

Bajel Pirata, Monastrell, Alicante, 2022
A simple, smooth, easy-drinking quaffer, strawberry-fruited, with a little substance and a hint of meatiness. Easy to quaff on its own. Now-2024What Spain delivers in spades is ripe, authentic red wine at a very fair price. The Monastrell (= Mourvedre) grape is the country's lesser-known winner, making deeply coloured, ripe and full-flavoured wines (far more tasty, incidentally, than weedy, over-cropped Tempranillo).
Simon's choice of what to drink at home: "Everyone...

Les Pradelles, IGP Herault, 2021
Bottled at a smart new co-op at Cébazan in St.-Chinian, this is an easy-drinking blend of Carignan and Grenache from the plains of the Languedoc. Red fruited with a surprisingly good texture, no rough edges, soft, light and juicily berried. Perfect for uncomplicated daily drinking. Drink this year.

Carignan
Carignan is the grape which really distinguishes the red wines of the Languedoc and Roussillon from those of the southern Rhône (in the latter Grenache is ubiquitous and dominant, and Syrah and Mourvèdre are the preferred blending grapes).
It has been a much maligned grape. For example Jancis Robinson’s Oxford Companion to Wine thunders: "Carignan,...

Valle Frio, Pinot Noir, Maule, 2021
Valle Frio is an offshoot of a family-owned business with 19th century origins: Maule used to be the old heart of wine production within Chile. Ownership of 300 hectares of vineyards in Maule and their own modern winery deliver total control of production and economies of scale. Many of you have already adopted their supple and fruity Pinot Noir as your go-to Pinot.

Les Vignerons d’Estezargues, Cuvee des Galets, Cotes du Rhone, 2021
This is the 19th consecutive vintage we have shipped of this deliciously fruity Côtes du Rhône, from this unfailingly reliable co-operative of just ten growers between Avignon and Nîmes. All wines here are from sustainably or organically farmed grapes, made naturally (i.e. without any additives bar the merest bit of sulphur to ensure stability) and bottled unfiltered.
Raspberryish mouthful, mildly spicy and very moreish. A long term favourite at SVS. Now-2025

This small co-operative, in a little village in the Gard, just west of Avignon, is now getting more attention here because oenologist Denis Deschamps makes "natural" wines, i.e. without adding any sulphur (or anything else) during winemaking.
We find this mildly amusing: we have been quietly shipping decent volumes of these delicious, forward-fruited,...

Grenache grows well in hot, dry regions, though it can develop very high (15 degrees+) alcohol.
As such it is grown principally in Southern France and Spain (as Garnacha). It is usually blended with other varieties in the Southern Rhône and Languedoc (Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, Cinsaut and others).
Its flavour usually encompasses the...
