Burnt House Vineyard, Bacchus, 2023

Burnt House Vineyard is the small - just five acres of vines on clay soils at the moment -project of a family-owned farm focused on regenerative agriculture just south of Stowmarket. The Bacchus grape, a 1933 cross of Silvaner / Riesling and Müller-Thurgau, is very successful in England, producing a fruity style with Sauvignon Blanc like aromatics. Scent of green orchard fruit. Lots of zip and energy. Perfect refreshing aperitif. Now-2025

Burnt House Vineyard, Chardonnay, 2022

This Chardonnay was vinified only in stainless steel, and went through malolactic (95%). Open aromas of citrus and cream (from some lees ageing). Very lightly buttery, cut by lemon, lime and green apple flavours. Displays classic English acidity but finishes in style, with attractive pithiness and commendable length. The label suggests drinking with chicken and cheese but the citrusy character accompanies smoked fish well. Now-2026

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Shotley Vineyard, Bacchus, 2023

Charlotte Davitt-Mills, formerly an insurance broker, now heads up a mainly female team at Shotley, which enjoys a beautiful site on clay loam between the Stour and Orwell estuaries. From an initial four acres of vines bought in 2017 they now manage sixteen and released their first vintage in 2020. Open and exotically fruited example. Dry, some weight, not too aromatic and with a distinct almondy finish. Now-2025

Shotley Vineyard, Pinot Noir, 2023

The family’s second vintage of a still Pinot Noir; all fermented and aged in old French oak. Deliciously perfumed: Morello cherries with a dark chocolate accent. Red and black cherries, silky and refined. Surprisingly aromatic finish – very Pinot. Honestly, decant this and serve it blind and defy anyone to identify it as anything other than Burgundy (and not necessarily simple Bourgogne Rouge either!). Now-2027

Winding Wood, Brut Rose, English Sparkling Wine, 2020

Winrrer of the Trophy for Best Sparkling Rosé in the 2024 Wine GB awards.
This is from a micro vineyard - just 2500 vines! - lying north of the A4 between Newbury and Hungerford, with the owners totally focused on hand-tending the vines. Just the second release of a rosé, it’s based on Pinot Noir with a little Pinot Meunier, given 18 months on the lees. In addition to the trophy mentioned above it took one of only ten gold medals awarded in the 2024 Independent English Wine...

Domaine Hugo, Hugo, Single Vineyard Brut Nature, 2020

This won the Trophy in the 2024 Wine GB awards for Best Vintage Classic Cuvée –remarkable given it was up against much bigger and better known names. From  the splendid summer of 2020, this is made by inspired winemaker Daniel Ham on the farm above Downton, south of Salisbury.
Hugo Stewart has to be one of the most experienced hands among English wine producers. Over twenty years ago he established Les Clos Perdus, a domaine which was a pioneer of bio-dynamic viticulture in the...

Great choice of good-value wines in the January sales. The website is really easy to use to make up an order. Delivery, as is often the case, was within 24 hours and, as usual, was well-packed.
