Domaine de la Chauvinière, Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur lie, 2022

Muscadet, grown at the mouth of the Loire (where the climate isn't that dissimilar to Cornwall) is the traditional French accompaniment to Atlantic oysters and other seafood. From low yielding vines on the estate's classic granitic soils - with a little clay. Open, generous mouthful with lemon and pear fruit, crisp and mouthwatering with textbook zest and balance, and a dry, gently saline finish. Now-2025

The hot and dry summer of 2022 brings so much ripeness and weight to this humble Vin de Pays.  Lacking any aggressive grassiness or excessive gooseberry fruit, this is fresh, balanced and perfectly food-friendly. Now-2024

Le Tende, Custoza, 2022

Custoza is a Veneto wine which may be blended from about nine named varieties: Le Tende’s is about 45% Garganega (the grape of Soave) with Cortese, Trebbiano and Trebbianello (= Tocai Friulano). Pretty scent of citrus and green herbiage; and then builds well on the palate, showing lime and grapefruit with a note of pear. Mid-weight, refreshing, a classic northern Italian white. Now-2024

Chateau Courbin Heritage, Graves, 2022

"Full bottle 1,267 g. 85% Sémillon, 15% Sauvignon Blanc aged for four months on lees with a small portion in oak." Subtle and sophisticated for the money. Tastes quite rich, too rich to be an aperitif, but a really fine, quite complex wine to drink with food. No hurry to drink. I think this will probably age quite well. Pungent, green-fruit flavours with a little bit of a smoky overlay. Long. VGV, 16.5/20, Jancis Robinson MW, November 2023

Badenhorst, Secateurs White, Chenin Blanc, Swartland, 2022

Secateurs is Adi Badenhorst’s second label. About 10% of this Chenin goes into old oak barrels for about seven months, gaining volume from the lees rather than oak flavour. So consistent: gently honeyed, sunnily exotic fruit - tangerines, lime, and orange peel - nicely textured and with a refreshing finish. Now-2025

Under a new, somewhat revolutionary label. From 90 year old vines at Cruz de Piedra, Maipú, Lovely fat and texture - fine tannins just buttressing a forward and generous cup of raspberries and cherries. Easy-drinking but with substance too. Now-2025

Carinae

Mendoza, Argentina

Frenchman Philippe Subra, with his wife Brigitte, came to Argentina as the national boss of EDF, the French energy giant - but loved the country so much he cleverly bought some long-established vineyards and settled there, on the south side of Mendoza. He has built a small cellar - boutique indeed, whilst wholly lacking the pretension that word implies!

Malbec

Malbec is a red grape whose home is in south-west France, and specifically in the appellation of Cahors.

There (known as Cot) it makes a strongly flavoured wine which is, all too often, tannic and rustic and needs several years ageing to show its best.

Like Carmenère in Chile, it is much more successful in Argentina than in its homeland. Introduced in the mid 19th...

Château Beausejour, Fronsac, 2019

The Melet family has owned Château Beauséjour in Fronsac for five generations. Since 2011, the consultant oenologist has been one of Bordeaux's finest, Stéphane Derenoncourt: here the grapes are picked by hand and the wine is aged for eighteen months, two thirds in barrel. 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc; and terrific this vintage, delivering ripeness but also lively, red-fruited freshness. Piekenierskloof, Pinotage, 2021

A clean and vibrant example of South Africa’s homegrown grape, developed by Abraham Perold in the 1920s as a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault (then known as Hermitage), hence the name. Sombre purple. Flamboyant blackberry and dark plum fruit, heated but not jammy. Peck of spice and dark chocolate hint from oak ageing. Intense. Good backing tannin. For years I had been hearing about Piekenierskloof – not as a wine producer but as a source of grapes for numerous other winemakers, young and old.
