Tenuta Casali, Bassamarea Rosso, Sangiovese Rubicone, 2020
From vineyards on the north-east side of the Apennines in Emilia Romagna, this is a bright, young, country wine. Fresh cherry perfume, all cherries and red berries with a little fat. Juicy Sangiovese, quite gluggable, but with a nip of tannin so could stand up to a pizza. Could be served cool. Drink this yearThe Casali family's organically farmed (in conversion) vines lie on the north side of the Appennines south-east of Bologna. This wine, named after its vineyard, is from Sangiovese...

Tenuta Casali
Mercato Saraceno, Emilia Romagna, Italy
Ask Monty Waldin, an English wine expert resident in Tuscany, where he would look for value in Italy, and he says Emilia Romagna - inspiring furious tasting and meeting the Casali family.
Based in Mercato Saraceno south of Cesena, the family have 20 hectares of grapes, mostly on hillsides on the edge of the Apennines.

Begali, Valpolicella Classico, 2021
2/3 Corvina and 1/3 Rondinella. Sucha beguiling floral perfume. Tons of fruit, cherries and plums; and aromatic and long. The vintage was hot and dry, lending this more concentration than usual. A very good example of an out of fashion wine. Now-2024The Begali family - father Lorenzo, son Giordano and daughter Tiliana - farm 10 hectares just east of Lake Garda. Although small, this is a top Valpolicella estate, having won numerous Tre Bicchieri awards in Gambero Rosso, but with very fair...

Le Tende, Bardolino Classico, 2021
I first tasted this organic red (80% Corvina and 20% Rondinella) in a side street restaurant in Verona. As I was knocked out by its juiciness and all-round drinkability, I hastened to taste with Le Tende. Quite soft and pale in tone, it offers up a subtle scent of cherries and almond cake; and then a sappy, silky palate of red cherries. Light, but perfectly ripe, this has a magical poise and purity. Apparently the previous 2020 vintage was a Tre Bicchieri winner, the top ranking in the...

Fiorano, I Paoli Sangiovese, Marche IGT, 2020
This delightful Sangiovese is Fiorano’s chief wine, now renamed I Paoli after the owners Paolo Beretta and Paola Massi. It comes from their amphitheatre of organically tended (and certified) vines on clay and sand near Cossignano. A fragrant, red-fruited scent prefaces a ripe and expressive wine with splendid depth of red and black cherry fruit. Light and moreish, but with plenty of concentration for tomato based pasta or white meats too. This wine has rightly gained a lot of fans....

Cossignano, Marche, Italy
We started working with Paolo Beretta (formerly a dentist) and Paola Massi (a research pharmacologist) in 2015, with immediate success.
Their wines exemplify perfectly the virtues of small-scale - they tend just 10 hectares of vines - organic cultivation. All exhibit an entrancing purity of fruit, and all are bottled with minimal sulphur...

Taliano, Dolcetto d'Alba, Ciabot, 2021
The Dolcetto grape, literally “the little sweet one”, when crafted like this makes a bright, sappy red perfect for summer drinking. Particularly enticing this vintage: vibrant purple hue; fresh cherry scent; and a supple, red-fruited gush of juicily ripe cherry flavours. So fragrant, with minimal tannin; and just so easy drinking. Now-2024

Michele Taliano
Montà d'Alba, Italy
The brothers Alberto and Ezio Taliano, third-generation growers, lack land in the grandest Piedmont sites, with 13 hectares assembled over quite a wide area, largely in Roero, which is just to the north of the river Tanaro, but also across the river in Langhe, source of their Nebbiolo d’Alba and Barbaresco.
But their wines are transparent,...
