Le Colombier, Touraine Sauvignon, 2021

Gooseberry scent - and gooseberry on the palate too, along with notes of crisp pineapple and kiwi fruit. With a lemony finish, this is correctly zippy. Now-2023.

Loire Valley

In early February I undertook our annual visit to the wine fair in Angers, escaping the snow which engulfed much of the UK during that week.

This is the yearly opportunity for the vast majority of vignerons in the Loire valley to show off their latest offerings to the rest of the world. The early season’s weather in 2008 was not kind, with variously frost, hail and torrential...

Waipara Springs, Sauvignon Blanc, Waipara, 2021

Waipara, about 35 miles north of Christchurch, lies far to the south of Marlborough, but the wines here are proof that this region, with perfect clay / limestone soils, can rival Marlborough as a source of top quality Sauvignon Blanc. Waipara Springs was the pioneer here, with its first plantings in 1982. Exhibiting intense pink grapefruit flavour with a lingering, crisp finish. Now-2023

Domaine de l'Aumonier, Touraine Sauvignon, 2020

From organically farmed (and certified) vines, this is a long-established best-seller here, admired for its overt fruitiness – so there are tropical fruit notes alongside the more typical citrus flavours. Plenty of volume and mouthfeel. This makes a relaxing aperitif. Now-2023

Francis Blanchet, Pouilly-Fumé, Silice, 2020

From a small block on very flinty soils in the heart of the appellation, this is an intense and ageworthy wine. Smelling of citrus peel and hawthorn blossom, it’s intensely grapefruity. In this hot year it’s smoother and rounder than usual, but with a splendidly long, steely finish. Now-2023

Fryer's Cove, Hollebaksstrandfontein, Sauvignon Blanc Fume, Bamboes Bay, 2020

From an extraordinary, isolated vineyard near Strandfontein 300m. from the Atlantic, cooled by the Benguela current. This is a tiny production wine named after the spring in the hollow of Bamboes Bay; fermented in French oak and clay pots, then aged in old barrels. Concentrated, rounded and complex, this shows fascinating notes of green fig, nuts, and chalkiness. Intense and different. Now-2025On the outskirts of Strandfontein, a peaceful beach resort on the Atlantic coast 300 kilometres...

Fryer's Cove

Bamboes Bay, South Africa

On the outskirts of Strandfontein, a peaceful village on the Atlantic coast 300 kilometres north of Cape Town, lies a lonely 6 hectare vineyard just 800 metres from the Atlantic Ocean.

How it came to be there is a remarkable story. Viticulturist Jan "Ponk" van Zyl knew this area from his experience at the nearby...

Greywacke, Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand, 2021

Greywacke is the creation of Kevin Judd, who was the winemaker for Cloudy Bay, and named for the high prevalence of rounded greywacke sandstones in the soils of the vineyard. Very high quality, showing considerable ripeness and concentration, lots of tropical and exotic flavours but also zingy. Now-2023
