La Salette, IGP Côtes de Gascogne, Rosé, 2021
This year the wine is 100% Merlot. There is real depth of flavour and a wonderful pink hue to this wine. Intense red fruit dominates and there is pleasing weight on the palate too. Delicious on its own but would work well with light lunches. Now-2023

Grüner Veltliner
Grüner Veltliner (Green Veltliner) is a white wine grape variety grown primarily in Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. The leaves of the grape vine are five-lobed with bunches that are long but compact, and deep green grapes that ripen in mid-late October in the Northern Hemisphere.
In 2008, Grüner Veltliner plantations in...

Domaine des Forges, Rose de Loire, 2021
A dry rosé made from 100% Grolleau, given a slow, gentle pressing in a pneumatic press - arguably a better way to make quality rosé than bleeding off a tank of red wine. Warm pink. This has a charming perfume of crushed red fruits; and a subtle flavour of fraises des bois and ripe red cherries. Fresh and clean, excellent as an aperitif or for a cold lunch - and note the lowish alcohol level too. Now-2023

Loire Valley
In early February I undertook our annual visit to the wine fair in Angers, escaping the snow which engulfed much of the UK during that week.
This is the yearly opportunity for the vast majority of vignerons in the Loire valley to show off their latest offerings to the rest of the world. The early season’s weather in 2008 was not kind, with variously frost, hail and torrential...

Cabernet Franc
Cabernet Francis a parent of Cabernet Sauvignon.
A cross of it with Sauvignon Blanc resulted in Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc tends to be softer and has less tannins than Cabernet Sauvignon, although the two can be difficult to distinguish. Many of the red wines of the Loire are primarily Cabernet Franc.

This is a light Pinot Noir rosé offering a real point of difference in the south. Clear pale salmon hue. Bright perfume of red berries. Light on its feet, refreshing, with a delicate sense of red cherry and a hint of stone fruit. Now-2023.

Languedoc-Roussillon
There’s something very complete about our annual offer of wines from the Languedoc and Roussillon: with whites, rosés and reds, and wonderful fortified wines, the Vins Doux Naturels which are such a speciality of the region, there should be something for all tastes. Secondly, there are wines for every budget; at every level we believe these wines continue to offer terrific...

Limoux
We have been shipping wines from James Kinglake since he left his life in the City in 2003 to buy the Domaine La Begude, about 350 metres up in the foothills of the Pyrenees near Limoux.
"I could not quite afford to buy in Burgundy so I chose the next best thing". But it hasn't always been an easy ride: he acknowledges how tough it is to be a farmer: his...

Les Quatre Tours, Coteaux d'Aix en Provence Rose, Classique, 2021
The 2021 growing season was long and warm, with temperatures remaining stable, giving a wine of wonderful balance and freshness. Based on Grenache, there is pretty red fruit, with hints of stone fruit and blossom. Very pale pink, classic Provence refinement. Now-2023

Grenache / Garnacha
Grenache / Garnacha
Grenache grows well in hot, dry regions, though it can develop very high (15 degrees+) alcohol.
As such it is grown principally in Southern France and Spain (as Garnacha). It is usually blended with other varieties in the Southern Rhône and Languedoc (Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, Cinsaut and others).
Its flavour usually encompasses the...

Domaine de la Ribotte, Bandol Rose, Cuvee Anais, 2020
Bandol, a small appellation on the coast east of Marseilles and west of Toulon, produces wonderful and distinctive rosés, based on the Mourvèdre grape which thrives in the sunshine and clay soils. Amazing aromas of peach juice and pink grapefruit leap out of the glass; followed by delectable intensity of peach melba and cream. Really well-textured, with a characteristic long and mineral, even saline, finish. The 2021 vintage follows. Now-2023

Domaine de la Ribotte
Bandol, France
The Domaine de la Ribotte is a family affair. Maurice Desblache’s grandfather bought the domaine which is now run by Maurice’s wife Laurence, the first female winemaker in Bandol, and their son Nicolas.
I came across their rosé while judging gold medal winners at the Decanter World Wine Awards. When we traced the family we were surprised to...

Cherrier Père et fils, Sancerre Rosé, 2021
A showstopper - 100% Pinot Noir and shows the full nobility inherent in this varietal. Wild strawberry and raspberry are the initial flavours which are joined with a subtle creaminess on the finish. The flavours linger and there is fresh acidity. This is an ideal rosé to partner with food and could handle poached salmon or white meats with ease. Now-2023
The Cherrier family have been delivering fine Sancerre to us for years now. Pierre took over the 14 hectares of vineyards on the...
