Domaine Montangeron, Beaujolais Villages, 2020

New model Beaujolais – fully ripe and easy-drinking but with inimitable local character too. Juicy, red and black-fruited, spot on. Now-2023The reputation of the whole region of Beaujolais was badly damaged by the swill of Beaujolais Nouveau that flooded overseas markets in the 1980s - only now is it beginning to recover. This is the new model Beaujolais - fully ripe and easy-drinking but with inimitable local character too.

Beaujolais

"…if red wine can be nubile, this red wine is" - Andrew Jefford, in The New France

That immediate fruitiness of the Gamay grape, allied to refreshing acidity, moderate alcohol levels - usually 12.5 degrees to 13 degrees - and ability to be served cool (don’t overchill, or you won’t taste anything), makes Beaujolais the definitive summer...

Gamay

Gamay is Beaujolais! Lovely medium to light red wine, with fresh acidity for summer drinking with great potential for ageing in good vintages.

Also planted in: the Loire; odd new plantings in New World, e.g. New Zealand

Domaine Montangeron, Chiroubles, La Grosse Pierre, 2019

Chiroubles is the highest of the Cru Villages, and as such is usually known for a lighter expression of Gamay; but this is well-textured, with red cherry and blueberry flavours. Now-2023

Lagneau, Regnie, Vieilles Vignes, Cuvée Gerard, 2020

Gérard is the father chez Lagneau. As ever, this is terrific, with a depth of colour and intensity of bramble and black cherry flavours rarely seen in Beaujolais at this price. Juicy and stimulating. Now-2024
Régnié is arguably the least known of all the Beaujolais Crus; it was the last to be given appellation status in 1988. But from vineyards across granitic hills just to the south of Morgon, the wines are properly dense and textured - especially from the Lagneau's ancient...

Jancis Robinson

We get super excited when Jancis Robinson (or one of her team) write about our wine!

Voted the world's most influential wine critic in polls in the US, France and internationally in 2018, Jancis views herself as a wine writer rather than a wine critic.

She writes daily for JancisRobinson.com and weekly for the Financial Times. She is founder-editor of The Oxford Companion...

La Chapelle des Bois, Fleurie, Grand Pre, 2021

Fleurie has an association with “flowery” – but the best wines can have substance too. Bright youthful purple. Vibrant red-berried and black-cherried fruit. Very traditional example, showing a lively bite and enough fruit tannins to accompany food well. Now-2024
Cru (from the 10 Cru villages) Beaujolais remains undervalued. The levity and charm of juicy Gamay is out of fashion presumably because people still hold bad memories of thin Beaujolais Nouveau. But with warmer...

Lagneau, Morgon Vieilles Vignes, 2020

Stunning Gamay: black cherry aroma; consistent with an intense blast of black fruit - cherry and blackcurrant. Shows a delightful freshness, and a little tannin, so can certainly be kept for years. The quality of the family’s ancient vines shines though. Now-2026

Lagneau, Beaujolais-Villages, Cuvée Jeannine, 2021

This is from ancient (60-100 year old) vines on steep schist and granite slopes in Quincié-en-Beaujolais, in the line of the Cru Villages and one of the best terroirs for Beaujolais-Villages. Deep purple. All black cherry and blueberry, juicy, but with remarkable substance too from the old vines. Lots going on, alive and energetic. Now-2024
