Domaine J. Laurens, Cremant de Limoux Brut, Les Graimenous, 2023

Les Graimenous is named after a type of grass growing around the domaine. We have always said this was a dead ringer for Champagne (and frankly much more fun to drink than some of the battery acid cuvées churned out by the giant Champagne co-operatives). It's a blend of 60% Chardonnay with 30% Chenin Blanc, 5% Pinot Noir and 5% Mauzac, lightly yeasty and toasted, with splendid volume.
We searched for many years for classy sparkling wine from Limoux before we found Domaine J....

Languedoc-Roussillon

There’s something very complete about our annual offer of wines from the Languedoc and Roussillon: with whites, rosés and reds, and wonderful fortified wines, the Vins Doux Naturels which are such a speciality of the region, there should be something for all tastes. Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Chateau Ferry Lacombe, Haedus, Cotes de Provence Blanc, 2024

Located in the shadow of the Mont Sainte-Victoire, made famous by Cézanne’s series of post-impressionist paintings, this family-owned domaine make some of our best-selling rosés  This year we were so impressed by one of their white cuvees we just had to ship it. Excellent concentration and depth with zesty lime and flat peach fruit kept in check by a taut mineral backbone. Long and impressive, it will be delicious with seafood. Now-2026

L'Estabel, Clairette de Languedoc, Fulcrand Cabanon, 2023

“Lemon and thyme on the nose and whistling with intensity on the palate. Acidity vibrating like harp strings. Acacia blossom, Amalfi lemon, wonderfully fragrant herbs and then something a little buttery but lightly bitter, like cold salted butter flecked with lemon zest. Distinct character. A great summer wine – I can just imagine having this with fish and chips at the seaside, somehow. GV. 16.5/20”, Tamlyn Currin, Languedoc Round-up, Summer 2024, jancisrobinson.com, 28th June 2024

Gruner Veltliner

Grüner Veltliner

Grüner Veltliner (Green Veltliner) is a white wine grape variety grown primarily in Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. The leaves of the grape vine are five-lobed with bunches that are long but compact, and deep green grapes that ripen in mid-late October in the Northern Hemisphere.

In 2008, Grüner Veltliner plantations in...

Coruscant, Chardonnay, Vin de France, 2023

A new project from the brilliant Paul Maury (of Combe St.-Paul fame). A selection of fruit from their old vines in the foothills of the limestone rock of La Clape has been given extended lees ageing and the merest hint of oak influence. Appealing scent of white flowers, stone fruit and a 2hint of butter. Generous fruit - yellow plum and green melon - with that limestone bite and freshness. Splendid length for a wine at this price. Clearly not a cool climate Chardonnay but so winning....

La Clape, France

Paul and Line Maury might be our youngest producers but winemaking runs in the genes.

Carignan

Carignan is the grape which really distinguishes the red wines of the Languedoc and Roussillon from those of the southern Rhône (in the latter Grenache is ubiquitous and dominant, and Syrah and Mourvèdre are the preferred blending grapes).

It has been a much maligned grape. For example Jancis Robinson’s Oxford Companion to Wine thunders: "Carignan,...
