Mas d'Agamas, Marsanne, IGP Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, 2021
A look alike for a Northern Rhône wine. Very elegant and aromatic. Attractive notes of pear and flat peach with a textured mouth feel. If labelled Saint-Péray this would be a much more expensive wine. Now-2023.

Mas d'Agamas
Young Vincent Visseq studied winemaking in Montpellier and went on to work at Chateau Capion, a grand estate near Mas du Daumas Gassac.
As with many young French winemakers, he also chose to broaden his experience in Australia, where he was able to vinify one vintage in the Goulburn Valley, working with Marsanne and Syrah in particular.
In 2009 he...

Château de la Liquière, Faugères, Amandiers Blanc, 2021
This is from a vineyard planted on some of their highest land about forty years ago; a blend of Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Vermentino and Marsanne. Tasting this was an utter delight. Fragrant and aromatic, there were aromas of lemon verbena and peach on the nose. The palate was mineral and slightly layered. There was real intensity of fruit too. A superb wine. Now-2024

Mas Crémat, Côtes de Roussillon, “La Yose”, 2020
“La Yose” is a Catalan reference for the black schist soils on which the wine is grown. This is a blend of Grenache Blanc and Vermentino which are both vinified separately. The Grenache Blanc in oak and the Vermentino in stainless steel. This is a wonderfully gastronomic wine. Stonefruit and lemon peel are matched with tarragon and a little spice. This would be perfect with barbecued fish and poultry. Now-2023.

Domaine Fontanel, Amae Blanc, Roussanne, IGP Côtes Catalanes, 2020
It’s always a joy to drink a rich, lightly oaked pure Roussanne. There’s a complex honeyed scent encompassing beeswax and fennel seed; and a rounded, powerful mid-palate, with honeyed richness cut by lime. Appealing apricot note on the finish. A splendid wine for rich white meat dishes – even with Lebanese spice. Now-2024.

From young vines of Syrah and Grenache, plus a little Mourvédre, grown in hot, dry and windy mountain vineyards near Tautavel (so it could actually be labelled as Côte du Roussillon Villages). This long-term favourite here has been repackaged into a Burgundy shaped bottle and the label features a brightly coloured image of what looks like finger puppets or happy ghosts. these jolly figures are tenuously linked to Tautavel's ancient history of human habitation.

This is from organically farmed (and certified) vines up in the wild hills at Puechabon, north-west Montpellier. The recipe for this successful marriage of Bordeaux and the south has changed over recent years; in this vintage it's based on young vine Mourvedre with old vine Merlot, plus a little Syrah and Grenache. Juicy, sappy red cherry, strawberry and blackcurrant flavours - spiced by a little of Mourvedre's savouriness. This feels crunchy and vital - very moreish and perfect for...

Clos de L’Amandaie, Heritage Carignan, IGP Vicomte D’Aumelas, 2020
Only seven producers work in the tiny IGP of Vicomte D’Aumelas. The vineyards lie between the Herault river and the Aumelas hills just to the west of Montpellier. Here Clos de L’Amandaie have a small plot of old vine Carignan which they use to make this wine. The grapes are given a short maceration to create a youthful and approachable style of wine. Vibrant red fruit with a slight rustic note. This is a bright wine that would be perfect with a plate of saucisson. Now-2023
