Burgundy

The Burgundy Pyramid

Making sense of the complexity of the complexity of Burgundy isn’t easy.

Though Burgundy only comprises 5% of France’s vineyard area, it holds 100 different Appellations, 25% of the entire French total.  There are no less than 5,000 growers, 85% of whom own less than 10 hectares, and four fifths of them make wine.

To make matters...

René Lequin-Colin

Santenay, France

This 9 hectare family domaine, which dates back over 300 years, has a lovely range of vineyards, deriving from the marital conjoining of Lequins from Santenay and Colins from Chassagne-Montrachet.

We think he makes no less than seventeen wines, though some in very small quantities, for example just one specially made small barrel of Batard-Montrachet!...

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Lequin-Colin, Bourgogne Chardonnay, Back to the Roots, 2020

"Broad, honeysuckle, clementine and spices on the nose. Juicy fruit, drawing from the clementine on the nose, adding Seville-orange zest, and the broad brushstroke of spice taking on the more precise flavours of liquorice, cinnamon, clove. Curved and rich in a way that reminds me a bit of South African Chenin. A sense of richness despite the relatively low alcohol. This is rather unusual for a Bourgogne, but very rewarding, long and VGV. 17/20, Drink 2022-2026", Tamlyn Currin, 14th October 2022, www.jancisrobinson.com

"We make no excuses for being unreconstructed Chardonnay superfans, so white Burgundy it is - and we were particulary excited to discover the Rene Lequin Colin, Back to the Roots Bourgogne Chardonnay 2020. We're constantly on the lookout for classic white Burgundy that has character and elegance but does not break the bank: this one hits the bullseye." Susie Barrie MW & Peter Richards MW, Decanter, Christmas 2022

Named because François Lequin deliberately gives this wine a traditional style of vinification: it's 100%  barrel fermented, with 10% new oak; and given regular lees stirring to develop texture and breadth. Open, clean and delicately perfumed. Lovely burst of fresh citrus, with splendid ripeness - there's almost a hint of stone fruit. Attractive fat and buttery, yet with a long fresh finish. As usual, this punches far above its generic Bourgogne Chardonnay label. Now-2025

From organically farmed vines and certified, but François prefers not to mention that on the label as he wants the wine to sell on its own merits, and not just because of organic credentials.
