Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Cherrier Père et fils, Sancerre, L'Essentiel, 2019

L’Essentiel is a selection from a vineyard farmed bio-dynamically, made naturally, left for an extended time on its lees and then bottled without filtration. Explosively open scent of ripe citrus and white flowers; and then an exotically flavoured mouthful of greengages, grapefruit and orchard fruits. In some ways akin to a very lightly oaked white Bordeaux, this is a fascinating and exciting bottle. Now-2023

Aba de Trasumia, Albarino, Rias Baixas, Spain, 2020

Albariño is the best known grape and wine of Galicia in Spain’s Atlantic north-west, and specifically of the Rías Baixas, the heavily indented coastline around Pontevedra. This comes from Viña Moraima, a tiny co-operative (just 13 growers producing around 4,000 cases a year) established in 2006 near Pontevedra. Most of the growers are small farmers with vineyards on the slopes of the Salnés Valley: and some of the vines, largely high trained on trellises in the traditional manner, are...

Domaine Fourrey, Chablis 1er Cru, Cote du Lechet, 2019

The Fourreys own a healthy 3.60 hectares of Côte de Lechet, divided amongst six plots over the hillside. It's a steep, southfacing slope with lots of clay and that combination delivers ripe and forward wines: wines from this 1er Cru often show well young. Mid weight, this already exhibits the distinctive creaminess of good Chablis. There's a hint of a floral note too alongside citrus. Now-2023

Koelfontein, Shiraz, Ceres, 2018

This terrific Shiraz, given 20 months in new French barrels, is spectacular and has garnered a slew of medals in the local wine competions: Veritas and Michelangelo golds and a double gold in the Vitis Vinifera. Youthful purple. Ripe black fruit and coffee aromatics. So bold and vibrant, a gorgeous sweet cassis gush, but also brightened by juicy acidity and backed by plentiful ripe tannins. Very long. Cries out for beef or lamb, grilled or roasted. Now-2025

Koelfontein

Ceres

I discovered the Koelfontein Chardonnay a couple of years ago by ordering a delicious bottle on the terrace of The Tulbagh hotel.

I had never heard of it – nor indeed any wine estate in Ceres, which is much better known as a fruit growing centre. The Conradie family, the seventh generation farmers who own Koelfontein, have abundant orchards, but they also own the...

Shiraz / Syrah

Powerful, black-fruited, often aged in oak, syrah/Shiraz comes in varying styles but at the top (such as Hermitage) can be spectacular and very long-lived.

There is no question that Syrah is now the most fashionable red grape for new plantings in many New World countries, especially South Africa and Chile.

Chamonix, Cabernet Franc, Franschhoek, 2018

New winemaker Niel Bruwer has upped the game at Chamonix: this is brilliant. Fabulous floral perfume, tinged with tobacco, pepper and leather. A big wine, given 18 months in barrel, but still elegant; jellied raspberry and blackcurrant flavours; silky, expansive and with plenty of freshness. Finishes with a cinnamon and cocoa flourish. Chamonix owns vineyards above the town running from 380 to 600 metres in altitude, planted from 1998.

Under the winemaking since 2001 of the youthful-looking Gottfried Mocke the wines got better and better, and in his latter vintages he steered the style of the wines here away from concentration and power and more towards elegance, finesse and...

Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Francis a parent of Cabernet Sauvignon.

A cross of it with Sauvignon Blanc resulted in Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc tends to be softer and has less tannins than Cabernet Sauvignon, although the two can be difficult to distinguish. Many of the red wines of the Loire are primarily Cabernet Franc.

Fontanel, Rivesaltes Ambre, 2011

One of the most distinctive and exciting wines in our entire stock. From late-picked, 60 year-old vines of Grenache Blanc and Gris, the Ambré - literally amber - tone develops after at least five years of mildly oxidative ageing in barrel (and here it’s kept a lot longer before bottling). Deep gold, clear and bright. This offer intriguing fumes: caramelised oranges, candlewax and marzipan, with a hint of sherry-like oxidation. That marmalade orange flavour is at the forefront, with...

Christmas Crackers

A classic selection: a bottle of Champagne, five whites, five reds, and a 10 yeard old Vin Doux Naturel.

SVS is one of the nicest merchants to deal with. Fabulous choices of producer and wines, friendly cheerful service, keen prices and boundless enthusiasm. Top wine critics (eg Jancis Robinson) often rave about the SVS portfolio of wines. Simon and his team also have a 'philanthropic' soft spot for South African wines where the whole wine trade suffered not just an export ban on wine but a domestic one too for a while. You cannot go wrong with any wine in the portfolio. Buy with confidence.

I look to a wine merchant to explore wine regions in person and discover excellent producers. Then of course to put good information on their web site, to provide accessible and friendly advice and to make the buying process easy and reliable. SVS ticks all these boxes. I am a very satisfied customer.
