Domaine des Dieux, Methode Cap Classique, Brut, Claudia, South Africa, 2014

The latest vintage of this superb South African MCC(i.e. made in the same way as Champagne): acknowledged as one of the very best sparkling wines in the Cape, it's fast gaining regular repeat orders amongst our customers.
From 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir, with four years on its lees and another under cork, it stands comparison with plenty of far more expensive vintage Champagnes: yeasty, creamy and with great breadth on the palate. Now - 2023

Domaine des Dieux

Hemel-en-Aarde, South Africa

The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, which translates as Heaven on Earth, rises prettily from just west of Hermanus.

When we first visited in 2003 the wineries, notably Hamilton Russell and Bouchard Finlayson, were all in the lower part of the valley, but more recently plantings at the top of the valley - higher, drier, with warmer...

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Chateau de la Liquiere, Faugeres, Amandiers Blanc, 2020

This is from a vineyard planted on some of their highest land about forty years ago; a blend of Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Bourboulenc and Marsanne. Such a pretty, lifted scent: citrus peel, lemon verbena and blossom. Ripe citrus attack, fresh and airy, and in its finesse and bite this displays surprising minerality. A winner. Now-2023

Pasji Rep, Zelen, Vipavska Dolina, 2020

Zelen used to be highly rated, the grape for the aristocracy in the Vipava Valley, but as it's fragile and low-yielding it's now just grown in a few pockets there. This is given some skin contact, lots of lees stirring, malolactic fermentation, and a third goes into old, neutral barrels; it is a brilliant near natural wine.
Pale gold. Mid-weight, lightly creamy; apricot fruited, with a twist of orange peel; subtle herbal notes. Long and classy. Now-2023

Always our benchmark wine at this estate - this is the 19th continuous vintage we have shipped. It is a mountain fresh exampe, from a bowl of isolated vineyards in the Cederberg mountains at over 3000ft; ad crafted to preserve freshness and bite.
Mouth watering entry of tangerine, guava and passionfruit. As ever, zippy and exuberantly fruity but also finishes crisp and dry. Now - early 2023Made by David Nieuwoudt, who took over the amazing Cederberg estate from his father in 1997....

La Purisima, Filarmonia, Yecla, 2020

MSM stands for Monastrell, Syrah and Merlot, 34% of the former and 33% of the others. Certified organic & vegan, this is a crowd pleaser, offering a gush of very ripe fruit - plum, blackberry and dark cherry - all underpinned by hints of vanilla and cinnamon. The ripe Syrah brings a certain sweetness. There's a pleasing mouth-coating quality too, with just a little well integrated tannin. The instruments on the label are presumably intended to symbolise the varieties playing in harmony:...

Begali, Valpolicella Ripasso, La Cengia, 2019

2/3 Corvina and 1/3 Rondinella, crafted in the Ripasso style by which the wine is left on the skins of the desiccated grapes used after the production of Amarone for about 10-12 days to promote a second fermentation, giving enhanced texture and alcohol. La Cengia is the name of the subzone of Valpolicella where the vineyard for this wine lies.

25cl. Megyer, Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos, 2016

Classic Tokaji is a thrilling wine, with seductive sweetness braced by racy acidity. These little bottles are from 80% Furmint, 14% Zeta and 6% Hárslevelü, picked from late October well into November,  and aged in small 220 litre barrels. Vibrant golden colour in the glass. Luscious honey notes are partnered with marmalade and driedapricot. This is deep and intense whilst being balanced by a vein of fine acidity. Exciting. Now-2025

SVS is one of the nicest merchants to deal with. Fabulous choices of producer and wines, friendly cheerful service, keen prices and boundless enthusiasm. Top wine critics (eg Jancis Robinson) often rave about the SVS portfolio of wines. Simon and his team also have a 'philanthropic' soft spot for South African wines where the whole wine trade suffered not just an export ban on wine but a domestic one too for a while. You cannot go wrong with any wine in the portfolio. Buy with confidence.

I look to a wine merchant to explore wine regions in person and discover excellent producers. Then of course to put good information on their web site, to provide accessible and friendly advice and to make the buying process easy and reliable. SVS ticks all these boxes. I am a very satisfied customer.
