Diamant, Cremant de Loire, NV

An easy-drinking, light, perfectly clean and fresh sparkling wine from Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay - produced in the same way as Champagne (i.e with a secondary fermentation in the bottle to create the fizz). Ripe, gently appley fruit, lightly creamy, with a little structure too. Easy to like, and classier than a lot of Prosecco. Now-2022Sparkling wine has been produced in Saumur in the same way as Champagne (i.e with a secondary fermentation in the bottle to create the fizz) since the early...

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most-widely planted varieties in the world.

Arguably not the most characterful grape, hence its common ageing in oak, yet at its pinnacle in Burgundy it produces some of the greatest (and certainly most expensive) white wines in the world. Look out for unoaked Chardonnay, it can make a pleasant change, and usually goes down very well with all those people who...

Domaine de la Chauvinière, Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur lie, 2020

Muscadet, grown at the mouth of the Loire (where the climate isn't that dissimilar to Cornwall) is the traditional French accompaniment to Atlantic oysters and other seafood. From low yielding vines on the estate's classic granitic soils - with a little clay. Open, generous mouthful with lemon and pear fruit, crisp and mouthwatering with textbook zest and balance, and a dry, gently saline finish. Now-2022
It is hard to believe when meeting Jérémie Huchet that he has been...

Corte Mainente

Soave, Italy

We have chosen a winner to work with in Soave with young Davide Mainente.

His family own 12 hectares of vines, both near the town (the Cengelle vineyard) and in the Classico hillside sites such as Pigno and Tenda.

His wines are winning rave reviews in Italy and here (Jancis Robinson described his 2017 Cengelle on jancisrobinson.com as "Chock-full of...

A Mâcon benchmark, a wine with a long-standing, loyal following, always offering generous texture and intensity. Attractive tangerine notes. In recent hot summers the Talmard family (Mallory and her husband Benjamin) have been careful to preserve freshness, keeping this bright and juicy. Now-2023

Aba de Trasumia, Albarino, Rias Baixas, Spain, 2020

Albariño is the best known grape and wine of Galicia in Spain’s Atlantic north-west, and specifically of the Rías Baixas, the heavily indented coastline around Pontevedra. This comes from Viña Moraima, a tiny co-operative (just 13 growers producing around 4,000 cases a year) established in 2006 near Pontevedra. Most of the growers are small farmers with vineyards on the slopes of the Salnés Valley: and some of the vines, largely high trained on trellises in the traditional manner, are...

Sax

A traditional winery in the Kamptal

The beginnings of Sax family's winemaking activity go back to the year 1660. Back then, wineries were run as a mixed farm. The average vineyard area was 1.5 hectares per farm. Up until the mid-1950s, vineyards in and around the Lengenfeld community in the west of Langenlois were cultivated by their ancestors.

Charmingly labelled wine - which we have shipped many times before. It's a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. Piekenierskloof, Stonedance, Hutton Red, Swartland, 2019

A pleasing blend of Shiraz and Grenache. The nose has a pretty, cherry quality. On the palate, fresh red and dark fruit flavours combine nicely. For years I had been hearing about Piekenierskloof – not as a wine producer but as a source of grapes for numerous other winemakers, young and old.

Domaine Montangeron, Beaujolais Villages, 2020

New model Beaujolais – fully ripe and easy-drinking but with inimitable local character too. Juicy, red and black-fruited, spot on. Now-2023The reputation of the whole region of Beaujolais was badly damaged by the swill of Beaujolais Nouveau that flooded overseas markets in the 1980s - only now is it beginning to recover. Fiorano, I Paoli Sangiovese, Marche IGT, 2019

This delightful Sangiovese is Fiorano's principal wine, now renamed I Paoli after the owners Paolo Beretta and Paola Massi. The 2019 vintage is youthful and exciting. A fragrant, red-fruited scent prefaces a fairly wild and dramatic flowering on the palate. Unlike previous vintages this would definitely benefit from drinking with food - for example any pork dishes or tomato based pasta - as it seems to show more mass; delivers an aromatic expansiveness; and then a dry, lightly savoury...

Xmas Pleasures

One sparkler, five whites, five reds and a bottle of Port

SVS is one of the nicest merchants to deal with. Fabulous choices of producer and wines, friendly cheerful service, keen prices and boundless enthusiasm. Top wine critics (eg Jancis Robinson) often rave about the SVS portfolio of wines. Simon and his team also have a 'philanthropic' soft spot for South African wines where the whole wine trade suffered not just an export ban on wine but a domestic one too for a while. You cannot go wrong with any wine in the portfolio. Buy with confidence.

I look to a wine merchant to explore wine regions in person and discover excellent producers. Then of course to put good information on their web site, to provide accessible and friendly advice and to make the buying process easy and reliable. SVS ticks all these boxes. I am a very satisfied customer.
