Creyssels, Languedoc, Picpoul de Pinet, 2020

Very open, citrus and pine scents. A touch more texture than usual, fresh and limey, with the merest saline note on the long finish. Picpoul is the traditional accompaniment to the oysters from the local beds in the Bassin de Thau near Sète, but it's as appealing as an aperitif as with all types of seafood. Now-2022
The appellation of Picpoul de Pinet, south-west of Montpellier, has become deservedly fashionable; irritatingly so, as we now struggle to get enough stock of this...

Aba de Trasumia, Albarino, Rias Baixas, Spain, 2020

Albariño is the best known grape and wine of Galicia in Spain’s Atlantic north-west, and specifically of the Rías Baixas, the heavily indented coastline around Pontevedra. This comes from Viña Moraima, a tiny co-operative (just 13 growers producing around 4,000 cases a year) established in 2006 near Pontevedra. Most of the growers are small farmers with vineyards on the slopes of the Salnés Valley: and some of the vines, largely high trained on trellises in the traditional manner, are...

Château Beauregard Ducasse, Graves, 2018

We sold lots of 2015, even more 2016, and now it’s the ripe and concentrated 2018 vintage. From the far south of the Graves near Langon, this is a suave Bordeaux, 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc; and just 20% in barrels. Open and generous red berried fruit, with all the sucrosité of a hot summer, but as ever this wine remains very classic in style. Excellent aromatics, very smooth tannins and restrained Graves character. Youthful but ready. Now-2025

Château Beauregard Ducasse

Graves

Jacques Perromat’s sixth generation family estate lies at Mazères near Langon at the southern end of the Graves, with about 50 hectares of gravelly vineyards on limestone sub-soils hacked out of the surrounding forest from 1850.

This is as far removed - and not just in distance - from the grand estates of the Haut-Médoc as possible: here the...

Wickhams Road, Pinot Noir, Gippsland, 2020

Gippsland is an up-and-coming coastal region east and south of Melbourne. Untasted as yet, but we anticipate this will have the same approachable Pinot character as its predecessors: bright red fruit, strawberry and cherry; supple and friendly. Now-2023
"Full screwcapped bottle 1,301 g. Franco d'Anna of Yarra's other label. Very pale ruby indeed. Perhaps that's the current Australian fashion. The wine has developed a certain earthiness on the nose since I last...

Jancis Robinson

We get super excited when Jancis Robinson (or one of her team) write about our wine!

Voted the world's most influential wine critic in polls in the US, France and internationally in 2018, Jancis views herself as a wine writer rather than a wine critic.

She writes daily for JancisRobinson.com and weekly for the Financial Times. She is founder-editor of The Oxford Companion...

Begali, Valpolicella Ripasso, La Cengia, 2019

2/3 Corvina and 1/3 Rondinella, crafted in the Ripasso style by which the wine is left on the skins of the desiccated grapes used after the production of Amarone for about 10-12 days to promote a second fermentation, giving enhanced texture and alcohol. La Cengia is the name of the subzone of Valpolicella where the vineyard for this wine lies.
Smoky aroma. Plentiful black cherry flavour, not raisiny but enticingly bittersweet. Savoury, with refreshing bite; elegant and long....

Begali

San Pietro in Cariano, Veneto, Italy

The Begali family - father Lorenzo, son Giordano and daughter Tiliana - farm 10 hectares just east of Lake Garda.

Although small, this is a top Valpolicella estate, having won numerous Tre Bicchieri awards in the Gambero Rosso guide. Furthermore Begali are one of the thirteen "Famiglie Storiche", historic familes of Amarone, an...

SVS is one of the nicest merchants to deal with. Fabulous choices of producer and wines, friendly cheerful service, keen prices and boundless enthusiasm. Top wine critics (eg Jancis Robinson) often rave about the SVS portfolio of wines. Simon and his team also have a 'philanthropic' soft spot for South African wines where the whole wine trade suffered not just an export ban on wine but a domestic one too for a while. You cannot go wrong with any wine in the portfolio. Buy with confidence.

I look to a wine merchant to explore wine regions in person and discover excellent producers. Then of course to put good information on their web site, to provide accessible and friendly advice and to make the buying process easy and reliable. SVS ticks all these boxes. I am a very satisfied customer.
